Christos Nikolaos Papagiannakos
(19 Apr 1889 - 25 May 1945)
"I first met these cousins when she went to get a job. Chris was a lot older than me, and the oldest in the family. Chris Pappas owned a restaurant with Paul Morfogen on 14th Street in downtown New York City. It was a very nice restaurant. His brothers, Gregorios and Spiro and possibly Leon worked there as well. Almost every Saturday, my girlfriend, Tessie, and I would go to Chris' restaurant. He wanted us to come and visit him, and when we said that he would be too busy, he insisted that he would stop what he was doing so he could spend time with us. He would introduce us to his customers in the restaurant, and he was always so kind and generous to us. Chris was a big man and had an easygoing personality and was always happy. He lived in the Bronx by Pelham Bay Park. Chris got me my first job with the Works Progress Administration (WPA). When I graduated high school, jobs were very scarce. I was one of the first Pappas girls to graduate high school. Chris knew many executives who came into his restaurant, and he asked someone at the WPA if he could get me a job. Tony Catchouras (my cousin) gave me a card to get an interview at WPA."
