History of Juniata and Susquehanna Valleys in Pennsylvania, page 1095, lists owners in the Assessment of 1830. Luke McDowell is shown with 83 acres.
Book 27 Page 135, Miami Co., OH, deeds: John McDowell for $100 paid by Luke McDowell quit claim all right to goods and chattels, land and tenements that may be owned by the said Luke McDowell at his death. Dated 6 May 1844, Witness Wm. English, J.P. This must have been when Luke gave John his inheritance early.
Ohio Mortality Schedule for 1850 listing deaths in year previous, by AIS, lists Luke McDowel of Miami County, age 69, born PA, died in August of consumption. Birth date calculated from the death date of 15 Aug 1849 on gravestone and age of 69y 6m 10d.
The will of Luke McDowell was found in Miami Co., OH, and in Perry Co., PA. It left his son Jackson one iron gray mare and to his beloved wife Elizabeth, 1/3 of the proceeds of all of his property, real and personal, which is not otherwise disposed of and all household property and one cow. The remainder of the proceeds to be divided equally among all of his children except daughter Mary and son John. John has received his share. Mary shall have $5.00 to be deducted from the estate before it is divided. No reason given for that. He appointed Jacob Wedener to be the sole executor. The will was dated 13 August 1849. Witnesses were S. T. Stewart and J. C. Dowlar. The will was presented for probate in Miami Co., OH, on 1 Dec 1849 and is Probate B151 #1824. It is also at Will Book B page 368 in Perry Co.,PA.
Petition to sell real estate not dated but apparently about 5 May 1852, states that since Luke died, Elizabeth McDowell, late widow of Luke, has also died, leaving the same persons as her heirs. At Luke's death, he owned the NW 1/4 of S6 T8 R5E except 60 acres off the west end of said quarter section, in Miami Co., OH. His children are: John McDowell, of the state of Iowa, Mary McDowell of one of the SouthWestern States", the particular name of which is unknown to your petitioner", Luke McDowell of Miami Co., OH, Mary E. Mays intermarried with Daniel Mays, Margaret Fulker intermarried with Henry Fulker, Lydia Templeton intermarried with Joseph Templeton, David McDowell, and Andrew Jackson McDowell, all of this county, and Sarah Ann Snow intermarried with J. Benjamin Snow of the State of Iowa.
Items left to the widow included a loom and the "aparates" and the family Bible. Copies of the appraisal and of the sale details are in file. Personal items sold came to $174.40.

I Received your letter on the 23d inst. asking information on the following points.
1st I know of no change being made after the will was made.
2nd. Luke McDowell & Sarah A. Snow died since the will was made. Luke had two heirs, Lovina & James H. McDowell. Sarah had too [sic] heirs David (J or I) & Benjamin A. Snow. John B. Snow is their guardian. the others I know nothing about who is their guardian.
3d. Mother made no will to my knowledge.
4th. The name of Mothers heirs at the time of her decease was Mary Elizabeth Magle John McDowell Luke McDowell Lydia Templeton Margaret Fulker David McDowell A.J. McDowell Sarah A. Snow.
5th. Luke McDowell & Sarah A. Snow died since Mother's decease Lovina & James H McDowell were Lukes heirs, no guardian to my knowledge. David J. & Benjamin F. (write-over hard to read] Snow were Sarah heirs John B. Snow is their guardian.
I have answered your letter as near as I know how.
