Mark Mcdowell, No. 215
Alex'r Mcdowell, No. 216
This family group obtained from the bio of Henry Fulker unless otherwise noted. That is the only documentation available so far that states Luke is Mark's son. The probate documents received from Miami County by mail do not include a will or any distribution or a listing of heirs.
"In March, 1849, Mr. Fulker was united in marriage by the Rev. Mr. Hershey, the pastor of the Lutheran church, to Miss Margaret McDowell, who was of Scotch lineage, the family having originated in the land of hills and heather. Mark McDowell was the first emigrant of the name to seek a home in America. He took up his abode in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, where he followed farming and also worked at the wheelwright's trade. He was a man of fine physique, six feet, two and a half inches tall, well proportioned and with jet black hair and deep blue eyes. Coming to Ohio he entered land on Lost creek, Miami county, about 1820, and later gave to each of his sons a farm. His children were: Mark, who located in Guernsey county, Ohio, and died there; Alexander, who made his home in Lost Creek township, Miami county, until his death; James, who was also a resident of that township and died there; Samuel, who died on his farm in Lost Creek township; Luke, the father of Mrs. Fulker; Mary, who became Mrs. Jones and died in this county; Rachel, who became Mrs. Richardson and removed to Indiana, where her death occurred; Sarah, who became the wife of Rev. Samuel Sheehan and removed to Illinois, where her remaining days were passed; Elizabeth, who became the wife of Samuel Deweese and died in Miami county; Susie, who married William Deweese and died near Casstown, and Matilda, who became Mrs. Abbott and died in this county."
As of 1-17-2005, not proven that Alexander is this Mark's father, but the family naming patterns, ages and the Lancaster County location make it highly probable. Will of Alexander and subsequent deed specify relationships, but still need to prove it is THIS Mark McDowell who is the son named.
If this the correct Mark, he was unmarried as of 18 Sep 1783 when brothers James and Luke, with their wives, and he, deeded property to Joseph McCreary.
Cemetery record copied at Miami County for Lost Creek Cemetery says: Jane McDowell, wife of Mark: Died 13 Feb 1840, 76 years; born 1764. In the estate papers for Mark McDowell is a statement made by Jane McDowell:
"To the honerable [sic] judges of the Cort [sic] of Common Pleas of Miami County this may certify to your honers that I do this day relinquish my rite [sic] as administror [sic] rep in the Estate of my husband deceased late of Lostcreek Township Miami County and State of Ohio to Alexander McDowell my eldest sone [sic]. January the 22nd AD 1840. Signed Jane McDowells x mark
Attest J. McDowell and Martha ann McDowell x "
The above may indicate that sons Luke and Mark were not her sons, as Alexander is the third child and there is a gap from 1781 to 1790. Note, however, that birthdates are unknown for Elizabeth, Mary, Matilda, Rachel and Sarah. [As of 28 Mar 2011, birth year for Elizabeth seems to be found.]
