Lancaster County ss On the fourth Day of May Anno Dominie 1779 Before me the subscriber appeared Francis Armstrong and James Hanna two of the subscribing Witnesses to the within Will and on their Corporal Oaths did declare and say that they were present and saw Alexander McDowel Sign Seal Publish Pronounce and Declare the within Writing as and for his Last Will and Testament and that at the doing thereof he was of sound and disposing Mind Memory and Understanding to the best of their Knowledge Observation and Belief. -
Be it Remembered That on the fourth Day of May Anno Domini 1779 The Said Will and Testament of Alexander McDowel late of Little Brittin Township deceased was proved in due Form of Law And Letters Testamentary thereon were granted to David Killough the Executor therein Named He being first duly Qualified well and truly to Administer the Estate of the said deceased And to Exhibit into the Register's Office at Lancaster a true and perfect Invnetory thereof within the Month. And to render a just Account of his said Administration
on the said estate when thereto Lawfully required. John Hubley, Reg'r.
The will seems to imply that only Charles and Nancy McDowell were Mary's children, and also that the others were Alexander's with a previous wife or possibly wives. Another possibility is that she was married to another McDowell before Alexander and those children took his surname.
A bio of Henry P. McDowell in Miami Co., Indiana, said this: "The first American ancestor of the family emigrated from Ireland about the time of the Revolutionary war in this country and settled in Pennsylvania."
