Individual Details

Johann Heinrich "John Henry, Hank" Eiben

(5 Mar 1883 - 8 Mar 1968)

(Monticello Express, Feb 10, 1927) Note: I'm note sure that this is the correct Henry Eiben, plus harvesting corn in Feb?
Henry Eiben appreciates the good turn given him by his neighbors a short time ago when they picked six acres of corn for him. It seems that Mr, Eiben was ill and in bed with a severe attack of rheumatism and unable to pick his corn. A large group of neighbors turned In and made short work ot the matter.

J. H. Eiben Loses House Last Week
The home of J. H. Eiben was totally destroyed by fire last week. The farm owned by the Tobias Tobiason estate, and is located in Lovell township. The building was insured for $2,000 In the Locher agency, and there was $500 insurance on the contents of the house. It is estimated by Mr. Eiben that the insurance will cover the loss.

Henry was living in Onslow, Iowa at the time of his sister Elise's death in 1959.

Jan Wright's favorite memory is of her Grandpa Hank's potato soup. She also recalls that her grandparents, John Henry (Hank) & Ellen (Ella) often had Christmas goose.
Diane Remond Adams remembers her Grandpa Heny Eiben rocking her and singing songs in German.
Wayne's favorite memory is sitting on grandpa's lap and listening to him singing, and giving him pennies.

Janice Wright comments that her dad, Clarence Eiben, told her the story about how her grandpa John Henry (Hank) Eiben had been asked by a group of men to burn crosses protesting Catholics. He refused. (Yay, Grandpa!) I am not sure when, but assume it was before he was married in 1917. I have read other articles that the Ku Klux Klan was active in Iowa.
