Individual Details
Sarah Jane Hughes
(20 Oct 1839 - 15 Apr 1926)
Sarah Jane Hughes married Toliver Phipps as stated in "The History of Daleville, MS", and that was Nov 8, 1859. Perhaps there is a marriage record in Lauderdale County, Miss, or Smith County, Miss.
According to the 1860 Census, Miss, Smith County, Toliver Phipps was 26 years old, born in Georgia (1834), and he was married to Sarah (Jane Hughes) Phipps 20, born in Mississippi (1840). They were living in the same household as Martha Hughes 60, born SC, and John Hughes 22, born Miss. There was also a John A. Phipps 23 born Ga (1837), (possibly Toliver's brother,) and a sister (or sister-in-law) Amanda Phipps 18 born Ga (1842). Also a John D. Florence 20, farm laborer living there in 1860.
According to Marie Winn Cornelius (2004), Toliver and Sarah Jane had six children: Ida, Georgia V, Emma Florence, a Son who died in childhood, Joel Anderson, and Alice.
Ida Phipps was born July 30, 1860 in Mississippi (probably Smith County)
Georgia V. Phipps was born Feb 14, 1862, probably in Smith County, Miss.
Emma Florence Phipps was born September 15, 1863, probably in Smith County, Miss.
An Infant son was born between 1865-1870
Joel A. Phipps was born Nov 22, 1868 in Trinity County, Texas
Iora Alice Phipps was born Sep 18, 1872, in Limestone County? Texas
According to "Families of Falls County (Texas)" in the Fort Worth Public Library, Toliver Phipps died when son, Joel was only 3 years old. Joel was brought by his widowed mother, sisters, and other relatives in a covered wagon to Hill County, Texas, and he lived in Hill County, Texas until a young man.
"Families of Falls County (Texas)" also states that Joel A. Phipps was born in Trinity County, Texas in 1868. Marie Winn Cornelius stated (in 2004), that Joel was born in Trinity County, Texas. According to Marie Winn Cornelius (in 2004), Toliver Phipps died Dec 1, 1873, in Robertson Co., TX.
Have not been able to find a record of Toliver Phipps and family in Texas in 1870. Maybe they were in Robertson County, Texas?
According to 1880 Census, Hill County, Texas, Florence Phipps, 16 orphant, b Miss; and Joel Phipps, 11 orphant, b Texas; were living with Thomas Oliver and wife Mattie(daughter of Daniel M. and Louisa M. Hughes Price?) 29, born Miss, and their children who were all born in Texas. We have not located Sarah Jane Hughes Phipps in 1880.
Around 1879, daughter Ida married John Norwood, Jr. and they were living in Falls County in 1880.
In 1881, Jan 25, Georgia Virginia married Columbus Moore Jones, in Falls County, Texas.
In 1881, May 12, Emma Florence married John S.H. Weatherred, in Hill County?, Texas.
In 1889, Sept 18, Iora Alice married in Marlin, Falls County, Texas.
In 1893, Mar 9, Joel Anderson Phipps married Mary Remington Singer, in Marlin, Falls Co., Texas.
According to 1900 Census, Falls County, TX, Sarah J. Phipps, b Oct 1835, 64 yrs old, widowed, born Miss, father born Miss and mother born Miss, is living with her son Joel A. Phipps (b Nov 1868, 31 yrs old) and family. Sarah J. Phipps is lised as having had 6 children, 4 living at that time. Records indicate that her daughter Iora Alice died 21 Nov, 1895, in Ennis, Ellis County, Texas, leaving her with 4 living children.
Also in the 1900 Census, Hill County, Texas, there is a Jane Phipps, mother-in-law, born Oct 1839, 60 years old, widowed, mother of 6, 4 living at that time, born Miss, father b Miss., mother b Ala. She is listed with John Weathered 49, and wife Florence ( Phipps) 36 years old, and children. (Per Marie Winn Cornelius, Florence Phipps married John Weathered.)
It is possible, if Sarah Jane Phipps was traveling from Hill County to Falls County, she might have been listed in both censuses. And as to the discrepancy in the date of her birth and her age, it is possible that someone might have given the wrong information.
According to Texas State Library and Archives of Confederate Pensions list, there is Sarah Jane Phipps, application #28392, Falls County, Texas, and her husband was Toliver Pharas Phipps.
According to "The History of Daleville, MS" Sarah Jane Hughes Phipps died April 15, 1926 in Texas, and Marie Winn Cornelius stated that she died in Falls County, Texas. Linda Caviness found in Oct 2004, that Sarah Jane is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Falls County, TX.
