In "Lauderdale County, Mississippi, 1853" is listed George Hughes, 3 males, 1 female, for a total of 4.
This is probably George, his wife Sarah, and two sons, Stephen and Henry F.
In the 1860 Census, Miss, Smith County: G. M. Hughes 36, is a farmer b. AL circ 1824, with his wife Sarah (Lacy) 30, b. AL. circ 1830 AL: along with their children at that time, along with a Martha Lacy 27, b. AL, who may be the sister of Sarah Lacy Hughes.
Also living near George and Family in 1860 in Smith County is J. W. Hughes 29, farmer, b. AL circ 1831, with his wife Martha F. (Mosely) 25, b. AL, and children 7 yrs thru 4 years, all born in Mississippi. This is George's brother Joel Wesley.
In the 1870 Census, Miss., Smith County, George M. Hughes 46 is a farmer, born AL, with his wife Sarah (Lacy) 40, born circ 1830 AL; and their children at that time, along with a Martha Lacy 38, b AL. who may be the sister of Sarah Lacy Hughes. Also living nearby is Stephen Hughes 20 and wife Dianah 21, and daughter Lennie F, one year old, all born in Mississippi. And nearby is Joel W. Hughes 40, wife Martha 34, and children Leona J 16, Richard C 13, Emily L 8, and Laura E 3. Stephen Hughes is probably George's son.
In the 1880 Census, Miss., Smith County, G. M. Hughes 56 is there, a farmer, born AL circ 1824, with his wife Sarah 50 housekeeping, born AL, and children all born Mississippi, Eugenia 23, Sally 18, George 16, Leonitus 13, Willie 10, and Alexine 6.
In the Census of 1900, Smith Co., Miss. Sarah Lacy Hughes 72 is living with her son William and family.
In the Census of 1900, Smith Co., Miss. George M. Hughes 77, is living with his son Ransom
Sarah Lacy Hughes died Oct 26, 1906, and is buried at Raleigh South Cemetery, Smith County, Miss.
George M. Hughes died June 1, 1908 and is buried Raleigh South Cemetery, Smith County, Miss. (Information about George and Sarah's burial place comes from a lady at the Robinson Memorial Library, Raleigh, MS, who I talked to on Nov 2, 2004.)

Living with his son Ransom L Hughes. He is listed as 77 yrs old, b. Nov 1877, widowed.His wife, Sarah, is also listed as a widow in the 1900 census, she is living with her son Judge William Hughes. Why they are apart and both listed as widowed, I don't know.
