Joel lived in Smith Co., Mississippi at the time the Civil War ended, 1863. A letter by Craig Hughes Sheely tells of the journey home by Joel and his brother Charles, "Charles E. Hughes was a private in the Cavalry Company G, 6th Regiment of the C.S.A. He joined at Dekalb, Mississippi. He was in the battle of Vicksburg, Mississippi when it surrendered. He and his brother Joel Hughes who also fought in this battle walked to Smith Co. where Joel lived. Charles rested a few days then continued on foot to Daleville and home, seeing for the first time his three month old baby girl Elizabeth (Betty). This was in Sept. 1863.
