Individual Details
Daniel Friday Salley Hughes
(Jun 1835 - )
Martha Stevenson's sister Eliza married Daniel Friday Sally. He was apparently named after his Uncle.
In June of 1835, Daniel Friday Sally Hughes was born in Alabama, to James Fisher and Martha Stevenson Hughes. In 1850 Mississippi census, Daleville, Mississippi, Daniel 15, is with his parents. In 1860, where is Daniel F.S. Hughes 25 years old? He is not listed with Martha Hughes, John and the Phippses in 1860.
In a book "History of Falls County, Texas" by Roy Eddings, Chapter "Under the Confederacy", is listed on page 143: Hughes, D.S. private, Company F, 41st Inf. Greens Brigade,
Hardiman's Div., Trans-Miss Enlisted in Texas, Marlin, Texas
or maybe - Hughes, Daniel S. Confederate Cavalry 4th Regiment, Texas Cavalry (4th Mounted Volunteers)
In the 1867-1869 Voter Registration List of Falls County, Texas( on microfilm in the Fort Worth Library,) on page 494 are listed D. S. Hughes, and O. J. Hughes (one below the other), date of registry was Nov 25, 1869, and it indicated they had both been in the state 12 months and in the county 20 days. (However, the registrar was a little bit lazy and used ditto marks quite a lot.)
In 1868 Falls Co TX tax records, Daniel Hughes has 1 horse $40, (also a John Hughes, 1 horse 40)
In 1869 Falls Co TX tax records, D. S. Hughes has 1 horse $50, (also Hughes, C.J. [O.J.?) 2 horses 80
In 1869, April 15, in Falls County,Texas, Daniel marries Harriet Rouse (recorded in Falls County.)
In 1870 Census, Falls County, Texas, Daniel Hughes 34, farmer, born Miss. and his wife Harriet 25, born Georgia, and son Irvin 1, born Texas, are listed. There is also living with them Susanna Rouse 18 and Joseph Rouse 16, both born in Alabama. This is probably a brother and sister of Harriet Rouse Hughes.
In 1870 Falls Co TX tax records, D. S. Hughes - abts.27, J Morganland - 100 acres - l horse $50.
In 1871 Falls Co TX tax records,Dan Hughes,agt,-50 cattle 300; also Hughes, Dan.-J Hogan land,1horse.
In 1872 Falls Co TX tax records, D. S. Hughes - S Peckridge land - 100 acres(in Lockridge League 1/2 way between Lott and Travis), G. Morgan land 100 acres(in J. Hogan League(Powers Chapel), 2 horses.
In 1873 Falls Co TX tax records, D.S Hughes- abst 264 Elam Stockbridge land,200 acrs, 1 horse, 8 cattle.
In 1874 Falls Co TX tax records, D.S. Hughes - E Stockbridge land - 200 acres, 1 horse $60
In 1875 Falls Co TX tax records, could not find Daniel; however, some of the records were unreadable.
(I re-checked the tax records (on microfilm in the Temple TX library), and made corrections to tax records.)
In 1880 Falls Co TX census, ED36, page 2, fam 9, D. S. Hughes 45, born Miss, and wife H.E. 34, born Ga. and son Irvin 9, dau Jessie 7, dau Emma F. 6, son D.O. 4, dau Minnie R , 1, are listed, (all children born TX. (There is also in 1880 census, a Joel L. Hughes 38, b. Ala circ 1842, wife Flora33?, niece Elizabeth 12, daughter Mary 7, and dau Lona 1, living in Falls County at the time, but I do not believe he is the brother of Daniel S. Hughes.
Between 1880 and 1900, Falls County,Texas?, Daniel S. Hughes (he would have been 45-55 years old) may have died ? However, it is possible Daniel and Harriet separated or divorced.
In 1900 Census, Falls County, Texas, Harriet (Mrs. Daniel) Hughes, born 1846, 54 yrs. widowed, born Georgia, is head of household and daughters, Jessie 27, Florence 26, and Minnie 21, are living with her.
Son Irvin would have been 31 years old and son D.O. would have been 24. One of the sons (possibly Irvin) and another child must have died, since Harriet was listed as having 6 children, 4 living at that time.
Concerning a question of whether or not Daniel F.S. Hughes and Harriet Rouse Hughes may have divorced around 1880-1900: In 1900 Census, Hill County, Texas, pct. 2, there is a Daniel Hues, Uncle born June 1836, 64 yrs old, divorced, born Ala, living with Thomas Oliver family. Martha Oliver was the daughter of Daniel M. and Louisa Maria Hughes Price. In the 1910 Census, Midland Co, TX, there is a Daniel E? Hughes, Uncle, 75 yrs old, widowed, born Ala, living with John S.H. Weathered family (whose wife was Florence E. Phipps, daughter of Sarah Jane Hughes Phipps.)
For Falls County, Texas, Confederate Pension Applications on file at the Texas State Library and Archives at Austin, Texas, there is listed Daniel S. Hughes, application #11900. When was this applied for and where did he live?
