John Yager
(2 Aug 1859 - 6 Aug 1909)
Ethel notes: Cabinetmaker and carpenter - hurt from fall from church steeple was working on which affected his mind. He lived w/Adam and then at Fergus Falls Hospital where he died. May have married Marie Wendt who died at childbirth; child - Louise who may have been raised by Lizzie. Was a widower in 1900 census.
John Yager was a cabinet maker and carpenter. One time while he was working in the belfry in a church steeple he lost his balance and fell to the ground. Many bones were broken and his mind was affected. His brother, Adam, kept him on his farm for a number of years. Later he went to the Fergus Falls hospital where he died in 1918. (Or perhaps in 1909 - Calvary Recs and MN Death records)
===================
It appears that John married twice. His first wife was Maria or Mary Wuloyz. She was the mother of two children, John A and Mary. She died in 1886. John married second, Mary Wendt, daughter of Frederick Wendt and Mary Herzberger. She died of complications of childbirth with daughter, Louisa who lived and was raised by her aunt Elizabeth.
John is in 1885 Census in St Cloud Twp of Stearns Co, age 25 and wife, Mary, age 23 and Children John, 3, and Mary, 1

John Yager, 36 born in Minn with children Louise, age 3, and Johnnie, age 12, both born in Minn. Also Lizzie, age 40, lives with them as housekeeper. (Lizzie is John's sister so his wife must have died by 1895. Lizzie helped to raise the children.)

Marriage
I think he married twice1885 Census his wife was Mary
in 1890 he married Mary Went on 4 Nov 1890. (Minn cert 29295027). (There is a record in St Mary's church records for Joannem Jaeger married to Mariam Went on 1890/11/04 ( 4 Nov 1890)) She died in childbirth with daughter Louise on 2 Oct 1891(the gravestone for Mary says "Maria Aug 18, 1873 - Oct 2, 1891"). Louise was born on 27 Sept 1891.
The first wife also named Mary (1885 MN State Census) died 13 June 1886 (There is a record: St Mary's Church Bapt, Marr, Death p 252: Maria Jaeger died 1886/06/13 spouse Joannis Jaeger age 26 years). This is the wife in the 1885 census. They were married before 1882 and had two children John (born 1882) and Mary (born 1884).
There is a Maria Yaeger and child buried in Calvary Cemetery (Sect 5, Row A, Grave 39 - Old Cemetery) who is next to Anna Yaeger and child (Sect5, Row 5, Grave 37 - Old Cemetery). I am pretty confident that Anna Yaeger was Adam''s 1st wife and is buried with son John aged about 7 months and Maria is John's 1st wife and is buried with daughter Mary.
There is a record that John Yaeger married Mary Wulotz on 4 Nov 1880 in Stearns County. Cert # 28006693. She is in the 1870 Cenus in St Joseph with her parents They were all born in Austria. In the 1900 census with John Yager and his two children son John A is listed as his mother being born in Austria.

Marriage
There is a record in St Mary's church records for Joannem Jaeger married to Mariam Went on 1890/11/04 ( 4 Nov 1890)====================
Grma Ethel said that "Uncle John (my dad's brother) married Marie Wendt who was mother's sister, Mary's, daughter. She died in childbirth with Louise and Aunt Lizzy raised the baby."
John Yager's children were born in: John 1882, Mary born in 1884 and Louise born 27 Sept 1891. At the Stanger Cemetery, near Rockville road, 6 miles west of St Cloud, the gravestone for Mary says "Maria Aug 18, 1873 - Oct 2, 1891". Her death date would line up with Ethel's story since Louise was born 27 Sept 1891.
But there is a record in the Catholic Church that says: St Mary's church records for Joannem Jaeger married to Mariam Went on 1890/11/04 ( 4 Nov 1890). If this was her then he must have been married before. She would have been too young to have been the mother of John and Mary, John's other children. More research.
There is a record: St Mary's Church Bapt, Marr, Death p 252: Maria Jaeger died 1886/06/13 spouse Joannis Jaeger age 26 years
When Louise applied for social security she listed her parents as John Jaeger and Mary Wendt.

Family story from my grandmother, Ethel Yager Condon, that her Uncle John Yager, brother of her father (Adam Yager), was a carpenter. One day while at work he slipped and fell off the steeple of a church. He was never "right" after that. He lived on the farm with them (Adam Yager farm) until he went to Fergus Falls. Think the accident happened after 1900 and he went to Fergus Falls by 1905. He is listed in the State Mental Hospital in Fergus Falls in 1905. He died in 1909 at Fergus Falls. He is buried in Calvery Cemetery in St Cloud.
