Adam J Yager

(18 Nov 1807 - 3 Dec 1895)

Adam may have been a widower before he married Eva. He was 16 (20)years older than Eva. In the 1860 Census they are living in Stearns County MN with their three children ages 1 to 5 and a Joseph age 19 born in Pennsylvania and a 70 year old lady named Mary. This Joseph and Mary are not with the family in 1870. Mary probably died in the 1860s. She was 20 years older than Adam so could have been his mother or other family member. Couldn't find another listing for a Joseph Yager in Stearns County in 1870. He may have been a son of Adam's by a previous marriage since he is 21 years younger than Adam or some other family member.

Maybe Joseph was born in Transylvania not Pennsylvania.

Blue eyes, rt hand, Yager has been spelled Yager, Yaeger and Jaeger. (Edna Grove)
Light brown hair
Came to America in 1849- 1855. Several dates are suggested. even 1835.

When Adam and Eva arrived in America they had no children, but Elizabeth born shortly after in Sept 1854( 8 Sep 1855). Also had boy, Joseph age 14, and woman, Mary, age 65 with them in 1860 . Adam was 46 and Eva was 29.

Pioneer Family of St Cloud. They homesteaded in Section 34 of St Cloud township. Just before 1895 they moved into St Cloud City living at 1509 7 1/2 St South. This later this was changed to 1509 Garfield Court. The last time I checked the house was still there.
In earlier times I think there was more than one dwelling on the lot. The older one may have been turned into a garage later.

Homesteaded in St Cloud Twp.
Married to Eva for abt 50 years

German Immigration
p 185 of Germanic Genealogy
There was very little German immigration to the US prior to about 1830. There were 3 great waves bewteen 1845 and 1895.
The first big wave lasted from 1846 to 1858. (This is the period that the Yaeger and Herzbergers and Dresslers came to America.) It began as the result of famine produced by crop failures of 1846 and 1847, which affected most of Europe and were accompanied by famine and cholera epidemics. Those who fled because of the unsuccessful liberal revolts of 1848, which occurred in nearly all of the many Germanic states, added to the flow. This wave peaked in 1854. Many Luxembourgers came in this wave, also.
Remember that much of the "German" immigration was not from "Germany". For one thing, Germany did not exist until 1871.
p 193
Emigration was also stimulated by the failure of the 1848 Revolution for freedom and German unity, which stemmed from the impact of the French Revolution. Although the number of political refugees was not large, the environment they created undoubtedly influences others to leave.
Moreover, in the early years of the Industrial Revolution had the effect of depriving many rural residents of their livelihood. Working conditions of industrial laborers in those years were as bad as Karl Marx depicted them. Besides, Germans were always hungry for a piece of their own land. In Hesse, feudal obligations (although not serfdom) still imposed a heavy burden on the peasants. Therefore, overseas emigration often seemed more attractive than internal migration. The center of emigration was a broad belt that stretched from Trier to Giessen, including the Hunsbruck, Hesse and adjacent areas.

YAG 003 - From Edna (Early notes received from Edna from a project she did for college)
Adam Yager and Eva Katherine Vogt (Yager)
My Great Grandparents

Adam Yager was born in Germany. He had light brown hair, blue eyes, and was right handed. He was a very jolly man. His trade was that of a shoemaker, and he was a very ambitious man. He was a very religious man and was a strict Catholic.

Adam married Eva Katherine Vogt who was born in Hessen, Germany about 1817. She had black hair, brown eyes, and was left handed. There were fourteen children in her family. Before her marriage she earned her living as a seamstress. Eva lived until she was ninety-three years old and during World War I prayed with her rosary that the Kaiser would win the war. She passed away in 1920. (Was 1918)

Adam and Eva Yager migrated to America and settled in St Cloud, Minnesota where Adam worked as a shoemaker. Their children were Adam, Lizzie, John, Kate, Joe, Lena, and Eva (married Joe Seeberger).

John Yager was a cabinet maker and carpenter. One time while he was working in the belfrey in a church steeple he lost his balance and fell to the ground. Many bones were broken and his mind was affected. His brother, Adam, kept him on his farm for a number of years. Finally he was sent to the Fergus Falls hospital where he died in 1918.
=============
I added the following notes to the above story after conversations with my grandmother, Ethel Yager Condon, grand daughter of Adam and Eva, about 1960:

Joe Seeberger and Eva lived in Fargo.
Lizzie lived with Louise (who married Bill Ahles) in St Cloud.
John married Marie Wendt. Died in childbirth with Louise (aunt Lizzie)
Marie Wendt was mother's sister's daughter (Mary)
Katie lived with Seebergers - old maid
Joe - painter in St Cloud
Lena - midwife in St Cloud, had girl Eva, who married Bill Moore
Joe and Lena lived on the old Yager homestead with Bill and Eva Moore
==========================
This family moved into St Cloud about 1886. The 1895 State Census says they were 40y 5 m in MN or about 1855 and they were 9y 2m in St Cloud or about 1886. It is thought they came to America in about 1855.=

There are two Yaeger listings in the Calvary Cemetery records of unmarked graves. They are buried next to each other.
One is Anna and child Yaeger. (I believe this is 1st wife of Adam, Jr)
Anna Yaeger and child are listed in cemetery records. These persons have no markers of any kind in the cemetery.
Plot=Section 5, Row A, Grave 37 - Old Cemetery

There is a listing for Maria and child Yaeger listed in the Calvary Cemetery. These persons do not have markers of any kind in the cemetery.
Plot=Section 5, Row A, Grave 39 - Old Cemetery
I think this is John's first wife Maria Wulotz
================
Why did Adam come to America in 1855 with perhaps new wife? They were married about 1850. No children came with them? Any other family members? The 1860 census has Joseph, age 19 and Mary mother? age ? Who are they?
Did they start their family here? Censuses say they were born in MN but if born in 1852 & 53 then that was before they came.
One reference had Mary Eliabeth (Lizzie) born in Pennsylvania. Joseph the boy aged 19 was born in Pennsylvania (or Transylvania). Age 19 would mean he was born in 1841.
There are questions about if Adam was married before and Eva was his second wife. This is possible since he was quite a bit older than her.
