There were apparently two unrelated Caldwell families in Logan Co KY and nearby counties. One of these was the family of Oliver Caldwell, said by George D. Blakey, to have come from Ireland in the middle 1700's, settling first in Greenbrier Co VA, then migrating to Tennessee and on the Logan Co KY by 1795. Online sources state that Oliver died in Tennessee, the widow and sons moving on to Kentucky. Three sons, Andrew, David, and Daniel C. lived in Russellville. Andrew & David ran a tanyard and tobacco hauling business; Daniel was a physician.

Margaret P. Caldwell does not fit in their family. Online sources indicate she was a daughter of Robert Caldwell and Mary Logan, both probably born in Pennsylvania. They lived in Albemarle Co VA, then on Cub Creek in Charlotte Co. A 1795 Mercer Co KY tax list shows that had moved on to Kentucky. Robert and Mary are shown to have had 12 children; the eldest, this Margaret P. [probably Margaret Phillips for her paternal grandmother]. They were also the parents of Samuel Caldwell, the first County Clerk of Logan Co, and a Brigadier General in the War of 1812. Samuel, his wife, and son John J. M. Caldwell are buried in a plot behind the house where they lived in Russellville, at 201 West 9th St. Their stones are either underground or unreadable.

Although online databases show Margaret P. Caldwell as having married John Cook, only a few show any children for this couple and those do not include Mary, who was likely their eldest child. Various deeds and contacts in Warren & Logan Co do suggest that Mary does indeed belong to this family.

Online databases give a date of death as 3 Aug 1844, Bowling Green, Warren Co, KY. Said to be buried Old Pioneer Cemetery in Bowling Green. A picture of her stone is attached to an Ancestry Tree.
