ROBERT CALDWELL

(9 Jul 1732 - 30 Jul 1806)

One database gave Robert's birth as 1719 in Cub Creek, Lunenburg VA which was not open to settlement that early. Another gave his birth as 9 Jul 1732 in Lancaster Co PA. Robert is supposed to have been the first child born in America and the family came in 1727, so if this is so he certainly wasn't born in 1719. That also seems too much younger than his siblings. I think it possible he is a grandchild of the immigrant, not a son. There is definitely need for more thorough research on this family. There was a Robert mentioned in the will of John Caldwell - confusion also exists regarding the son James.

Robert Caldwell and wife Mary Logan were first cousins, once removed - their common grandparents being Joseph Caldwell and Jane McGhie.

Robert Caldwell said to have been in Albemarle Co VA. They moved to Cub Creek Charlotte Co VA about 1741/42 [this would have been Lunenburg at the time, Charlotte was not formed until 1764 and he would have been only a child unless he was born much earlier, which I suspect]. He was on a tax list in Mercer Co KY in 1795 with 18 slaves, 19 horses and 67 head of cattle. He died there 30 Jul 1806 and willed his plantation to son James; to his son Robert he gave 200 acres of improved land or its value. WB 3, p.190, Mercer Co KY

Disputed SAR Connection:
31 Dec 1965. George Willis Caldwell was accepted into the Arkansas Society of the Sons of the American Revolution re his ancestor Robert Caldwell. George was at time age 64. He shows Robert Caldwell, dying 30 Jul 1806 in Danville, KY, which is in Boyle Co. That Robert had a son named Robert is not disputed but the data in the application seems questionable on several points.
He has that Robert Caldwell, born 7 Oct 1762 in Prince Edward Co VA, married Hannah Willis. This younger Robert died 1837 in Adair Co KY. George then descends through a son of Robert and Hannah, named Willis Caldwell who married Dicey Mann Caldwell [surely a cousin]. The source listed is Adair Co Court records, Book 1, p. 449, June 17 1838. And a Family Bible list.
Robert Caldwell is said to have served as a private in Capt. Heaberd Smallwood's Company, Col. Wm Grayson's Regt., Continental Troops. Enlisted 25 Jun 1777 for 3 years. The Company Muster Roll for Mar of 1778, dated 3 Apr 1788, shows he had been discharged. He is said to have moved to Kentucky in 1781, and settled in Boyle Co, four miles from Danville. He also took part in an expedition against the Shawnee under George Rogers Clark, enlisting 22 Oct 1782 and discharged 24 Nov 1782. He served 34 days with Capt. Andrew Kincead's Co of the Lincoln Militia and also served under Capt. Wm McBride's Co, from Lincoln Co. He was in service at the Falls of the Ohio. Enlisted 20 Apr, discharged 20 May 1782.

In 1813, Robert Caldwell, son of the Robert who married Mary Logan, was living in Madison Co KY, as proved by the above deed. Adair Co was formed from Green Co in 1801. Danville today is in Boyle Co KY, but that county was not formed until 1842 - out of Mercer and Lincoln counties. All of this seems logical.
The problem is this:
Robert Caldwell, the younger is also said in other databases to have married Fanny Irvine in Lincoln Co KY on 14 Dec 1782. Robert was a Senator of Kentucky, representing Madison Co KY, in 1801. And he is said to have died about 1848 still in Madison Co.

The Robert Caldwell who married Hannah Willis is, instead, a son of David Caldwell, and a first cousin to the Robert who married Francis Irvine.

The descendants of David Caldwell, b. 1708 or 9 in Ireland and who came with his father John 1727, did live in Mercer Co KY. David married Mary Dudgeon, likely a cousin. Dicey Mann Caldwell was, I believe, a granddaughter of David & Mary through their son John Cleveland Caldwell who married Jane Neeley. This John said born 11 Jun 1750, Lunenberg. It would seem that all these Caldwells are certainly related, but men of the same name have been scrambled.

As far as the Revolutionary service is concerned - I have found no trace. There was certainly such a unit as Grayson's Regiment.
Serving as an aide-de-camp to George Washington, Grayson rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. In 1777, he recruited a regiment for the Continental Army known as Grayson's Regiment [said to be from Prince William Co], and served as its colonel through the Philadelphia campaign. In 1778, he served on a commission dealing with war prisoners, and in 1779 he resigned his military commission to serve on the Congressional Board of War. In 1781 he returned to Dumfries to practice law. Like many Continental Army officers, he was an original member of the Society of the Cincinnati.
His wife was Eleanor Smallwood.
There was also a Robert Caldwell who served in Pennsylvania, later applying for a pension, but he cannot be this man.

There is also an old NSDAR Lineage Book with reference to the service of Robert Caldwell. Member #141206, Isabel Zanon Caldwell, born in Boyle Co KY. Traces to Robert Caldwell (1732-1806) served as a private in Capt James Knox's Co, Col. Daniel Morgan's rifle regt, Continental troops. Born Lancaster Co, PA, died Danville, KY. Also Member #126130. The lineage through son James and his 2nd marriage to Phebe Henderson seems sound - but I suspect the service to be questionable.

He is said to be buried Caldwell-Irvine Cemetery, Danville, Boyle Co, KY.
Find A Grave Memorial# 46565744
Boyle County was formed from Mercer and Lincoln in 1842.
FindAGrave says:
Cemetery notes and/or description:
The Cemetery is now on The Keith Tarter farm. This cemetery is no longer receiving burials.
Five miles southwest of Danville on KY 34, Lebanon Road, turn right onto Irvine Road, then 3/4 of a mile on the right.
Records for this cemetery are found in the book Boyle County, Kentucky, Cemetery Records, 1792-1992, compiled by the Boyle County Genealogical Association, 1992, revised and enlarged 2008.
