John S. Proctor

(27 Jan 1811 - 15 Apr 1895)

Logan Co DB T, p.242 4 Aug 1834. Zachariah Lansden to John Proctor. $400. Tract on waters of Little Whipporwill part of Alexander Montgomeries 200 acres survey. Corner of the original survey, line of McFaddins military survey, 117 acres. Signed: Zachariah Lansden. Rec. 4 Aug 1834

John S. had married Polly Ann Watson, 25 Aug 1835, and they are probably in the 1840 census as John Proctor, Jr. with a male child under age five, a male age 20-30 (John) and a female 20-30 (Polly).

This might be this man's deed - when he planned to leave Logan Co.
Logan Co DB U; p.246 18 Mar 1836 John Proctor to Ben Proctor. $500. Waters of Little Whipporwill, part of Alexander Montgomerys 200 acres survey. A. Proctor. Rec. 23 Mar 1836
[John Proctor married Polly Ann Watson on 25 Aug 1835, Logan Co]

A codicil to his father's will, 5 Jul 1844, gave John's share of inheritance to his wife and children; John's brother Charles to be trustee. But I'm not at all sure this was because John had died as could be assumed - it's more likely he was already "gone to Texas".
1850 Census - Caldwell Co, TX - where his brother Charles and his wife, also a Watson, were living. Household 127
John S. Proctor, 39, Saddle Maker, b. KY
Mary Ann, 37, b. VA (as was Lucy Jane Watson - Charles Proctor's wife)

The 1870 census is a bit strange and it would appear that John may have a new and younger wife - but the two daughters are the same. Hh 32
J. T. Proctor, 59, dry goods merchant, b. KY. Now has only $200 worth of pers prop - probably had slaves in 1860

First wife Mary Watson is also in that cemetery - born 18 March 1813, died 18 Jun 1869, in Texas.
Cornelia McGehee, second wife, is shown born 6 May 1838, Columbus, Muscogee Co, GA - she died 29 Jan 1916 in Bryan. Her mother America Booker McGehee was born 3 Feb 1808 and died 26 Nov 1895 and is also buried Bryan City Cemetery.
Daughter Virginia is buried in the cemetery - note says her headstone is badly damaged but shows her as the daughter of J. S. and M. A. Proctor. The top of the stone that would have had dates has broken off and is missing. She may have died between 1870 and 1880.
Louisa Proctor's stone is also damaged but also lists parents as John S. and Mary Ann Proctor. She was born 29 Jun 1844 in Kentucky, died 26 May 1871.
