Robert Jadwin

( - Aft 1658)

Robert was a citizen and freeman of London, February 1616/7.
By 25 Sep 1651, he is found in Virginia.

Robert was schooled at the Merchant Taylor School, said to exist even in modern times.
He succeeded his father as Clerk of the Cutlers:
"On the 28th February 1627-8 being the buriall daye of Thomas Jadwyn the late Clerk his son, Robert Jadwyn was elected Clerk in his fathers room"

There were legal problems regarding debt against the Cutler in 1637 - and in December of 1641, knives were seized as being bad or deceitful wares.
By 1647, Robert was in London and listed as a Watch & Clock Maker in the Guilds of London.

There is in the notes of the Cutlers, a letter read on 25 Sep 1651, from Virginia:
"Meanwhile Robert Jadwyn, the late clerk had gone from bad to worse, retired or was packed off to Virginia whence he sent a letter to the company read on 25th September 1651 peticoninge for and desiring thereby the knyves soe seized the Master & Wardens had seized being bad and deceiptfull wares". The court ordered they be sent to him and were delivered to his brother in law Mr. Smith, a Silke Dyer to be sent to him. (there is no record of such a brother in law who was a silk dyer - possibly he was related to Robert's wife)

6 Oct 1658 - Power of Attorney from Robert Jadwyn to his "friend" Jonathan Jadwin to conduct a land transaction would seem to prove presence of the family in Virginia.

Persons listed for transport were often done so years after the fact - the date of their actual arrival cannot be predicted by the patent.

The following entry in this book has confused the two Robert Jadwin. The children named were the children of his son Robert, not the children of Robert & Cisley, as made plain by her will which named several sons and no daughter.
