Thomas Jadwin

(Bef 1555 - Bef 28 Feb 1627/28)

Thomas Jadwin/Jadwyn was born about 1555 in Borwick/Barwick, Lancashire Co, England, son of William Jadwyn, Esquire - the Heralds granted a coat arms to the Jadwins in 1629, through Robert, son of Thomas, grandson of William. The title "Esquire" in this time period usually meant the eldest son of a Knight, or the young son of a Lord or Earl or person of judicial or financial authority.

The borders between Cheshire and Lancashire Counties changed several times but Welsh families had settled in the general area as early as the late 1800's. A Jadwyn family is mentioned as early as 7 Sep 1446 in Cheshire. The spelling with "wyn" is also suggestive of Welsh heritage.

Thomas Jadwin was a cutler - Clerk of the Cutlers Guild, 1585-1627. Cutlers were the makes of knives and sharp weapons, later extended to cooking utensils. He was also a solictor, acting as the Guild's legal advisor.

Captain John Smith identified Thomas Jadwin as a Virginia Company investor who in 1615 also had shares in Somers Island (bermuda), then a part of the Virginia Company of London. Thomas Jadwin is listed as being in the Virgina Colony in 1611 and 1623 - if this is the same man, this must have been exploratory or review visits regarding the Company.

Thomas signed his will, 4 Nov 1626 - it was recorded for probate, 5 Mar 1627/8 in London. He accumulated a degree of wealth including lands in Virginia, Bermuda and three public houses in London - the Unicorn, Saracens Head, and the Crown. The Saracens Head ws apparently divided into several tenements. The pubs were in Southwark, across the Thames River from London and were left to his wife Elizabeth during her lifetime and then descend to son Robert (who was the only son who survived). He also have his Bermuda lands to daughter Hannah and her husband Thomas Dunscombe.
