Mathilde Maria "Martha or Mattie" Schniebs

(1 Nov 1874 - 11 Jun 1952)

2 September 2010. I want to mark this date as this was the day I found the ship's passenger list for Emilie Schniebs and her three daughters. I was able to then connect Mathilde with the Mattie who had written to her brother Otto - an old letter in my files which came from Hallsville [Boone Co], MO.

In one of letters that came to Otto from Mattie and I. B. Stevinson was the note to tell his sister [Ida McKim] that Aunt Crotia Haggard had died and been buried at Red Top Cemetery. I have no idea how she may have been an aunt, but possibly an aunt to Mattie, Ida & Otto. Was she a sibling of their mother or their father? I found the following graves on FindAGrave at Red Top Cemetery, Hallsville, MO:
Grotia A. Haggard, b. 30 Nov 1836, d. 7 Jan 1905. Wife of Alvin B.
Alvin B. Haggard, b. 16 Oct 1830, d. 14 Oct 1890. Husband of Grotia A.
Willie R. Haggard, b. 11 Dec 1868, d. 5 Feb 1869. Son of AB & GA.
Eventually I found in earlier censuses that Crotia Stevinson Haggard was a sister to Samuel Milton Stevinson, so was an aunt of Israel B. Stevinson, not kin to the Schniebs siblings at all.

Mathilde later adopted the name Mattie; her name was given as Martha Maria on her death certificate. Family tradition is that Mattie met Israel Stevinson who was visiting his brother in Ft Smith - Mattie was working as the housekeeper for the brother. Mattie told her children that she was born in Leipzig, Saxony.
