Mary Ida Schniebs

(31 Jan 1878 - 29 Feb 1964)

Ida was called "Kim" by Joe's children. She both read and spoke some German, taught to her by her mother, but had forgotten much of it. She was only about four when they immigrated. She ran a grocery store when she and Paul lived in Ft. Smith. After she was widowed she continued to support herself on the farm for many years, raising cattle, and selling her wares (anything from eggs, to homegrown vegetables, to baked goods) at the Farmer's Market in Fayetteville. She grew the most gorgeous dahlias I've ever seen - they always won prizes at the Washington County Fair. When she married Frank Prince, she told him she was at least 10 years younger than she really was because he was younger - he didn't know about the age difference until the family told him after her death.

Ida was born in Germany and I found her arriving Castle Garden, New York City in 1883 along with her mother and sisters; however that isn't exactly as her birth place was related during the years.
Location of birth as Lutherville, AR - Joe gave to Kay for Stuart's Baby Book.
Location of birth as Oklahoma Territory on her Death Certificate.
1900 & 1910 censuses give birthplace as Germany; 1920 says Oklahoma. As far as I've been able to determine, the family never lived in Oklahoma at all. This may perhaps have been a cover for her German heritage in the years during and immediately after the first World War. She never denied her parents were born Germany, just herself. I have never found any evidence that she or her parents ever became citizens.
1930 census, she gave her birthplace as Oklahoma; daughters Gladys & Mildred listed Germany as their mother's birthplace.
Lutherville is in Johnson County; Knoxville is the County Seat. A letter to brother Otto refers to Lutherville as "his home". I've never discovered when, or if, the family actually lived in Lutherville, but there were a number of German immigrants who did settle there.. Ida's brother Otto lived in Hope AR circa 1910; then moved to Ft. Smith to work in Paul McKim's business.
Grave Marker gives her date of birth as 31 Jan 1881, but this doesn't agree with all other known facts. I remember Joe & his sisters debating her age when she died - they all had different ideas.

I found Ida's mother, Emilie and her three daughters on the Passenger list of the "Salier" which arrived from Bremen, Germany, in New York, 11 Jun 1883. They were in Steerage.

Anna, age 10
Mathilde, age 8
Ida, age 5
August Schniebs had arrived a year earlier, also at Castle Garden. 13 Mar 1882. The ship was the "Oder" and he had come from Bremen, Germany, via Southhampton, England. He was age 41. Some records have indicated his name was Otto Schniebs, but that was the name of a son the couple had in Arkansas.

The 1900 Census reveals some interesting facts. Ida was born Jan 1878 in Germany. She immigrated in 1882 and had lived in this country for 18 years. 12 year old Otto, Ida's brother, was living with Ida and Paul, although his mother lived at least until after the 1930 census. She had remarried, however, so perhaps Otto was more comfortable with his sister than his stepfather. In 1900, Emilie was living with her daughter Annie & family in Pope Co, AR.

OBITUARY
Mrs. Ida McKim Prince, 83, a resident of Fayetteville for the past 38 years, died Saturday in a local hospital. She was born Jan. 31, 1881 in Oklahoma Territory [both the date and place were errors] and was a member of the Lutheran Church. Survivors include the husband, Frank of the home; one son, Joe McKim of Springdale; two daughters, Mrs. Wallace Greenlee and Mrs. Roger DuCoin of Fort Smith; four grandchildren; five great grandchildren; three stepsons, James Prince of Dallas; William J. Prince of Lawrence, Kan., and Ollie Prince of Bentonville; two stepdaughters, Mrs. Mary Sue Brown of Los Angeles and Mrs. Alberta Mayes of Fayetteville.
Funeral was to be at 2 p.m. today at St. John's Lutheran Church. Burial in the Lutheran Cemetery at Springdale under direction of Moore's Chapel.

I wonder how the family determined the number of grandchildren. Daughter Gladys had only one son; Mildred had no children. Joe had Sandra by his first marriage; he legally adopted me; then he had two more daughters by my mother. Either I was left out of the count, or Sandra was. If my dad had input, Sandra was omitted. The number of great-granchildren was, I think, derived this way: I had one child in 1964. Her grandson Bill Moore had four children, and I think probably all of them had been born by 1964.

Attending the funeral services for Mrs. Ida McKim Price, held Monday at the Lutheran Church in Fayetteville, were Mrs. Pearl Robinson, Mrs. Nora Karnes, Mrs. Rebecca Williams, Mrs. Ola Walker, and Miss Melva Karnes.

I had always wondered if Ida ever became a U.S. citizen, but then I discovered that immigrant women who married U.S. citizen husbands prior to 1922 derived citizenship through their marriage. So she certainly was a citizen. Just in case, I also had a search for records done at the US Citizenship and Immigration Services in December of 2011 - they had no records for her, but confirmed that she would have become a citizen by marriage.
