William Johnson

William first married Martha Jones. He had a daughter Jane who married John Wiley. The will of William's mother, Anne Cosby [remarried after the death of Thomas Johnson] referred to her granddaughter Martha Jones Wiley. Nicholas Meriwether mentioned daughter Ann Johnson and grandson William Johnson in his will.

According to the 1782 Personal Property Tax List of Richmond VA, he was then about 60 years old, or born about 1722. By 1752, he lived in Fredericksville Parish in Louisa Co VA.

Martha Jones was born 20 May 1728, daughter of Laine Jones and Anne Barber. Children of William and Martha were Philip, b. ca 1750, whose wife was Margaret; Jane b. 1755 who married John Wiley, 28 Feb 1775, Louisa Co; Martha b. 1759 who married Francis Graves in 1783, Henrico Co; Frances b. 1762 who married Samuel Allinson, 23 Mar 1793, Henrico Co; and Sam b. 1767 - he was dead prior to September 1813, leaving Nicholas Johnson as his only heir. Martha Jones Johnson died about 1767, possibly because of complications of childbirth.

William married a second time, 7 Nov 1768, to Anne Clayton, Lousia Co VA. She was the widow of John Clayton. The will of John Clayton mentioned four children: Samuel, George, Philip & Caty. His wife was not named but she was called his "last wife". In the 1782 Personal Property Tax List for Richmond, 15-year-ole Catherine Clayton was in the household of Will and Ann Johnson.

April 8, 1771  Wm Garrett, Senr. of Trinity Parish, Louisa Co. for the Love and Affection I bare to my Grand Daughter Caty Clayton do lend her the use of my Negro Girl named Lucy till she arrives at the Age of 18 or Marries, I then Give my sd. William also gave a slave to daughter Ann a few months later - probably she was a daughter of his first wife Martha, since Ann was married at the time:

Garrett, Senr, Gentlemen Justices of Louisa Co.  Wm Johnson & Anne his wife , on 8 Mar 1773, conveyd to Robt Goodwin a tract of land, East side of Southfork of Goldmine Creek, 450 acres.  Anne cannot travel... get dower release. 5 Apr 1773. [probably during Anne's pregnancy with daughter Susanna.]

The date and place of his death is not known. There was a notice in the Richmond newspaper 22 Jun 1808 which referred to a case in Chancery. John Barrett & James Miller, Plaintiffs v. Defendants: James Jones, executor of John Jones, Ann Johnson widow of William Johnson, John Wiley & Jane his wife, Nicholas Johnson, Meriwether Johnson, John Johnson, Mary Johnson, the infant children of Francis Graves deceased, John Poindexter, and others. The case itself has not survived.
