Thomas married Elizabeth Ashton. They had four sons: Thomas, Richard who married Susanna Garret, Henry Ashton Johnson who married Anne Meekie, and George who married Jean Row. He had seven children by his mistress Ursula Row: John, William, Robert, James of Buckingham, Jane, Lucy, and Alice who married Uriah Harris.

This deed establishes which is the "elder" Thomas Johnson, but it's still impossible to tell if "Jr" is his son, or a nephew, son of his brother Nicholas.


Maj. Thomas's son Richard married Susanna Garrett.  On March 2,1770 in Louisa Co, Susanna Garrett married Richard Johnson son of Major Thomas Johnson and Elizabeth Ashton Johnson.

Will of Wm. Garrett, Parish of Trinity.  To my wife Elizabeth Garrett land and plantation whereon I now live.  A certain tract sold to Benj. Lewis on Contrary.  To my son Wm Garrett all land south side of Franks Run adj. Watkins & Steward.  To my son Henry Garrett all land in Spotsylvania Co., also tract of land lent my wife.  All my children: Wm Garrett, Henry Garrett, Ann Johnson, Elizabeth Terrell & Susanna Johnson.  Exors: sons Wm & Henry Garrett.  Dated 3 Feb. 1779.  Wit: Nathaniel Garland, John (X) Lane.  Rec: May 9 1780 ( Chappelear…, Abst...Lo. [William Garrett's daughter Ann had married Maj. Thomas's younger brother William as his second wife.]

p.224   Letter entered into record.  March 21, 1770  Still propose to give my son Richd. Or his lawfull issue at or before my Death a thousand acres of land including the Old and New Court house and all the improvements with all the stocks of horses, cattle, sheep & hogs.  I have already given him a mulatto boy named Charles; intend to give him [list of several slaves evidently - very difficult to read]  I also propose to keep him in the Business he now is in as long as he continues to deserve it ….  with an equal quantity of the above slaves with what you propose to give your Daughter, also an equal quantity of stock  Whereas my son Richd will be my Heir at Law in case my son Thos.
