Nancy Jane Kirkpatrick was born about 1854 in Franklin County, Illinois. She was married twice, first to Charles Edward Rogers Winthrop II, who was born 10 July 1847, Perry County, Illinois and died 2 July 1877. After her first husband's death, she married on 17 July 1879 in Franklin County, Illinois to Frank R. Adkins. Her second husband died probably in 1882. After her second husband's death, Nancy left Illinois with her children and her younger brother, Isaac Barber Kirkpatrick, and moved to Mound Valley, Kansas, to be near her elder brother Snyder Solomon Kirkpatrick, who was an established lawyer in Fredonia, Kansas.
Nancy had two children from her first marriage.
William and Nancy Hobbs appear together on the 1900 Census of Venita, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory (Oklahoma) and 1920 at Oswego, Labette Co., Kansas.
Her gravestone transcription shows birth year as 1858, other sources show 1853.
