Snyder Solomon Kirkpatrick

Snyder Solomon Kirkpatrick was born in Franklin County, Illinois 21 February 1848, the fourth child of J. Foster and Hester (Dial) Kirkpatrick. He died 5 April 1909 at Fredonia, Kansas. Mr. Kirkpatrick served in the Union Army, enlisting in the 136th Illinois Volunteer Infantry in 1864. He was a private in Company A. He was enrolled at Mulkeytown, Illinois and served about six months. He reenlisted in the 20th Illinois Cavalry but that had been filled before he reached rendezvous with the regiment. He tried again for the 63d Regiment of Infantry in which his brothers William A. and Reuben D. were serving. But before he arrived to serve with that regiment the war had ended. Enlistment papers describe him as 5 feet 10 inches tall with blue eyes and light hair.
After the war S. S. Kirkpatrick engaged in the mercantile business at Du Quoin, Illinois, for two years with his brother Reuben, then attended law lectures at Ann Arbor, Michigan. Afterwards he returned to Illinois and was admitted to the bar in that state at Mount Vernon, 30 June 1868. For a time he practiced at Cairo, Illinois, then moved to Fredonia, Wilson County, Kansas in September 1873.
Kirkpatrick was a prominent and successful lawyer in this area, noted particularly for his forensic gifts. He was for many years attorney for the St Louis and San Francisco Railway Company.
In 1880 Kirkpatrick was elected county attorney for Wilson County. In 1888 he was elected to the state senate and represented Neosho and Wilson counties, for one term. In 1892, he was nominated by the Republican Party as a congressional candidate for the Third District. He failed in this first attempt, but was again nominated in 1894, defeating J. T. Botkin, and served as a member of the 54th U.S. Congress. In an attempt for a second term he was defeated. He was twice more the Third District Republican Candidate for Congress, but was unsuccessful both times. From 1903 to 1905 he served one term in the Kansas House of Representatives.
On 25 December 1867, Kirkpatrick married Rose H. Bowen of Vincennes, Indiana, at Mattoon, Coles County, Illinois. After Rose died at Fredonia on 13 February 1887, Kirkpatrick remarried. His second wife was Mrs. Floren Adell (Oakford) Buker of Chicago. She had been previously married to Harry L. Buker and divorced him 6 October 1887.
Snyder and Rose had five children of their marriage. There is no record of children to the second marriage that is available to us.
In Volume II of Kansas: a cyclopdiea of state history....published 1912 by Standard Publishing Co., Chicago, edited by Frank W. Blackmar, and found on-line at the Kansas Gen Web site, it states Snyder S. Kirkpatrick died April 5, 1899. This is an error, he died in 1909.

Kirkpatrick, who was congressman from this district from 1891 to 1896, died at his home at Fredonia Monday. He has been suffering from paralysis for the past five years. He had many friends in Chautauqa county.
