==================

* W. A. Kirkpatrick's brother, Snyder Solomon Kirkpatrick, was on the Congressional Committee dealing with veteran's pensions at the time of the passage of this special bill. One cannot help but feel that, since the file includes correspondence from S. S. Kirkpatrick, he was instrumental in getting the bill passed to support his brother's widow. It is asserted that W. A. Kirkpatrick served both as sergeant and lieutenant. The papers indicate no service as lieutenant, yet it appears that William's widow was paid at the higher rate of a commissioned officer.

On the 1870 U. S. Census of Mulkeytown, Franklin Co., Illinois, W. A. Kirkpatrick appears with his wife Rebecca and daughters Minnie and Mattie. W. A. works as a merchant.

On the 1880 U. S. Census of Osage Mission, Neosho Co., Kansas, William A. Kirkpatrick appears with his wife Rebecca A. and daughters Minnie, Lula and Hester. Also in the household is William's mother Hester M. Kirkpatrick. William works as a commercial agent.
