Charles Edward Rogers Winthrop II

(10 Jul 1847 - 2 Jul 1877)

The Cairo Bulletin, Cairo, Illinois, July 4, 1877, Page 2, Col. 1: A special dispatch from Tamoroa, Perry county, gives the following account of a difficulty which occurred in that place on Monday evening. Some of the parties --Winthrops, have friends and relatives in this city: About 5 o'clock this afternoon a dispatch came to DuQoin to summon the coroner to Tamoroa to hold an inquest as there had been dome deadly shooting and cutting there. Your correspondent arrived here with the coroner and gained items as follows: The citizens were and are in a great state of excitement over one of the bloodiest affrays which has occurred in Southern Illinois since the battle of Maddox lane in Franklin county, and the murder of Sisney and Spence in Jackson county two years ago. Ex-Judge Winthrop had one son killed outright and one other so seriously shot that his life is despaired of, and two constables of this place are to-night suffering from injuries received by cutting. The circumstances as elicited at the coroner inquest are as follows: Henry and Charles Winthrop and Barney Dye became somewhat noisy and were request to keep quiet by Constable Taylor whom they defied. Upon his attempt to arrest them they seized his revolver and during the melee which followed he was seriously stabbed. He called for assistance when Constable Corgan came to his aid, but met with resistance. Corgan stated that Charles Winthrop fired the first shot at him, but at all events he (Corgan) fired in quick succession with the result as above stated. All the parties are well known and the occurrence is deeply regretted. Elijah and Barney Dye and one Anderson are under arrest. The verdict of the coroner's jury acquitted both the officers. The scene when the father of Charles Winthrop viewed the corpse of his dead son beggars description, and the lamentations of the mother and sister are better imagined that described.
