On the 1910 U. S. Census of Pittsburg, Crawford Co., Kansas, Orval Briggs appears with his wife Elizabeth and sons Hershel and Ellsworth. Orval is a bookkeeper at the post office. Orval and Elizabeth have been married 3 years and are the parents of 2 children.

On the 1930 U. S. Census of Pittsburg, Crawford Co., Kansas Philip O. Briggs appears with his wife Elizabeth and sons Hershel, Ellsworth, Glenn and Robert. Philip is principal of a junior high school. The two families previous to the listing of Philip's are his sister Maud [Mrs. Arthur Glaser] and his mother's.

Letter from Pittsburg City Schools, Pittsburg, Kansas dated February 11, 1947 states that Mr. P. O. Briggs, RR #2, Pittsburg, Kansas will be retiring at the end of the school year, as mandated by the Board of Educations having an automatic retirement age of 65.

Newspaper clipping, no date or source: Briggs Services. Last rites for Philip Orville Briggs, 76, former principal of the Lakeside Junior high and grade school, who died suddenly at his home of R. R. 2, Tuesday, will be at 1:30 o'clock Friday afternoon at the South Broadway Baptist church. Dr. Eugene Dawson and Rev. C. J. Askins will conduct the service. Burial will be in Mount Olive Cemetery. The body is at the Ellsworth funeral home.

Second notice. Former Lakeside Principal Dead. P. O. Briggs Succumbs Suddenly At Age of 76. Philip Orville Briggs, 76, former principal of Lakeside junior high and grade school, died suddenly at his home of R. R. 2, at 12:40 o'clock yesterday morning. Death was apparently due to a heart attack. The home is in the Kirkwood vicinity, southwest of Pittsburg. Mr. Briggs was born Jan. 19, 1979 in Rich Hill, Mo., and moved with his parents when small to a farm near Lamar. Then in 1903 he went of Kansas City where he worked in a bank for a year. After moving back to Pittsburg, Mr. Briggs worked as a bookkeeper for the Kansas City Southern. In 1908 he started teaching in the Pittsburg city schools. In 1912 he went to Coffeyville where he taught until 1917. He then returned to Pittsburg and attended the College from which he was graduated in 1920. Mr. Briggs was the first principal of the new Lakeside junior high and grade school building. He served as principal there until 1947 when he retired. A membership was held in the South Broadway Baptist church. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Reese Briggs of the home; four sons, Herschel R. Briggs of Oakland, Calif., Ellsworth R. Briggs of Pratt, Glenn O. Briggs of El Reno, Okla., and Dr. Robert L. Briggs of Sedan, Kas.; two sisters, Mrs. J. E. Strosnider of South Gate, Calif., and Mrs. A. E. Glaser of Minden and one brother, I. N. Briggs of Fort Scott.
