On the 1900 U. S. Census of Scott Township, Bourbon Co., Kansas, Isaac Briggs appears with his wife Emma C. and children Everett O., Jessie C., Virgil N., Lillie M., Etta and James P. Isaac and Emma have been married 16 years. Emma is the mother of 7, 6 of whom are currently living. Isaac is a farmer.
The Fort Scott Tribune, Fort Scott, Thursday, March 14, 1957, Page 3, Col. 6 &7: Isaac Newton Briggs, 96, 753 South Lowman, retired superintendent of Evergreen Cemetery, died at 10:10 p.m. yesterday at his home. The son of Philip and Elizabeth Shanklin Briggs, he was born Nov. 4, 1860 at Mount Sterling, Ill. He moved at an early age from Mount Sterling to Rich Hill, Mo., and later to a farm at Lamar. He was married to Miss Emma C. VanBenthusen April 11, 1883 at Rich Hill. They moved to Bourbon County near Devon, in 1890 and later to a farm south of Fort Scott where they lived until he became superintendent of Evergreen Cemetery, which position he held for 27 years until he retired 22 years ago. Since his retirement he has lived at the present address. Mrs. Briggs died five years ago on March 13, 1952. He was a member of the Baptist Church. Survivors are two daughters Mrs. Marvin (May) Darling, Fort Scott; and Mrs. Ethel L. Ferguson, Little Rock, Ark.; four sons Everett and Virgil, Fort Scott, Jesse C. DeSoto, Mo.; and James Philip, El Reno, Okla.; and two sisters, Mrs. J. E. Strosnider, South Gate, Calif.; and Mrs. Arthur Glaser, Pittsburg. There are 14 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the Konantz Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. John Hooge of the First Baptist Church, conducting. Burial in the Evergreen Cemetery.
