Obituary of Elmer Leonard Kirkpatrick, St. James Leader Journal, Feb. 4, 1998, Section A., Page 12. Elmer Leonard Kirkpatrick of St. James, Mo., passed away Thursday, January 29 at the age of 81. Elmer was born September 14, 1916 at Patterson, Mo., the son of the late Joseph A. and Emily Alice Rainwater Kirkpatrick, On September 25, 1942 at Vienna, Mo., by Brother Travis John, Elmer was united to Ida U. Underwood. To this union three children were born. Elmer Kirkpatrick is survived by wife Ida Kirkpatrick of St. James; son Elmer Wayne Kirkpatrick and wife Darcas of New Paris, Ohio; daughters Helen Loretta Kirkpatrick and Martha Irene Hodge and husband Danny, all of St. James,; sister Edna Darden and husband Norman of Lampe, Mo., Betty Kime of Piedmont, Mo., Inez Martin of Stigler, Okla., Judy Hicks and husband Ralph of Shreveport, La., Carolyn Young of Omaha, Neb., Dorothy Carrow of Piedmont, Mo., and Fred McMurray of St. James, Mo.; 3 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews. Elmer is preceded in death by his parents; brother Edward B. Kirkpatrick and Billie C. Kirkpatrick; along with sister Irene Magnusson. Elmer was a man of service, service to his God to his country and to his family. Elmer was a member of the St. James Christian Church, where he served his Lord in many areas. He was an Elder and Deason for many years and had been Chairman of the Board. He helped ordain many who went to the fields of harvest. he was a World War II Veteran, where he entered into the Army on February 15, 1941 at Camp Joseph T. Robinson in Little Rock, Arkansas. From Little Rock, Elmer went to California, Camp House Texas, Fort Mead in Maryland, Camp Shanks in New York and then to Liverpool, England, where Elmer accepted Christ and was baptized. Traveling with the military he went to Normandy and Brittany France from June 13, 1944 to August 25, 1944. There he received a Good Conduct Medal, Expert Inf. Lodge, South Western Defense Command, Purple Heart, Victory Medal and two Bronze Combat Stars. Elmer was wounded near Brest, France on August 15, 1944. He received an Honorable Discharge as a Disabled American Veteran. He was a member of the American Legion #607 and the Crawford County D. A. V. #65. After his service career he was employed at the Missouri Veteran's Home and worked as a nurses' aid for 26 years. Elmer enjoyed his family and spent many hours sharing stories overseas. He was a baseball Cardinal fan, and enjoyed painting, latch hook, and could be found making craft items for his family. Elmer will be sadly missed. Services for Elmer Kirkpatrick were held Sunday, Feb. 1, 1998 at 2 p.m. at the St. James Chrisian Church in St. James, with Brother David Menge officiating. Music will be provided by Debbie Menge, organist, and Don Davis vocalist. Pallbearers were Rodney Underwood, Leland Underwood, Randall Underwood, Duane Pickett, Justin Hodge, and Bobby Martin. Honorary Pallbearers were members from the American Legion Post #607 and Members of the Crawford County D.A. V. Post #65. Burial was in the St. James Cemetery. Taps was played at the graveside by Elmer's grandson Justin Hodge. Memorials may be made to the St. James Christian Church of Providence Hospice; cards are available at Jones Funeral Home in St. James. All arrangements were under the direction of the Jones Funeral Home in St. James.
