Obituary of Martha Dodson May

Mrs. Martha May, one of the most highly respected pioneers of this county, who for the last forty four years has been a citizen of this county died at the home of her son, T.E. May, Wednesday evening, May 26th at seven o'clock, after a severe illness lasting several weeks. She had not been well for several months, owing to a fall which she had two years ago. She was seventy nine years of age, having been born in Missouri, November 11th, 1841.

When a child of twelve she crossed the plains with her parents in an emigrant train, the family settling at Rosebrg, Oregon. It was here that she became acquainted with Thomas M. May to whom she was married in December 1860.

In 1871 they came to the territory of Washington, locating near Sprague on Rock Creek, where they remained until 1876, when they came to Dayton where she has lived until the day of her death.

Her husband died on the 14th day of December, 1914, and is buried in the Dayton cemetery.

Mrs. May was the mother of nine children, two of whom have died. Those living are: Mrs. Roxy Young of Pullman; Mrs Jeanette Thorp of Council, Idaho; H.D. May of Walla Walla; Mrs Lena Harach of Waltsburg; Mrs. Mary Hester; Thomas E. and Miss Mattie May of Dayton. These were all present at the funeral, which was held at the Hubbard and Rogg chapel yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The service was conducted by Rev. J.C. Harvey, pastor of the Methodist church, of which organization she had long been a member. The body was laid to rest by the side of that of her husband.
