Thomas M. May was born February 24, 1834 in Meadville, Crawford county, Pennsylvania. When ten years of age his parents moved to Illinois and settled on a farm in Dekalb county, sixty miles west of Chicago. There he acquired a common school education. When eighteen years old he served as an apprentice for a cabinet maker, learning the trade thoroughly.
On September fifth, 1855, Mr. May went to California, via New York, arriving in San Francisco October 20, following. He mined in Shasta county until the spring of 1858. Moved to Douglas county, Oregon, where he married in 1860 and settled down, working at his trade until 1871, when he sold out and moved with his family to the territory of Washington, settling on Rock creek, Whitman county, where he resided till the year of 1876. He moved to Dayton the same year and has lived here ever since.
During his residence in Oregon he became acquainted with Henry Gale, with whom he formed a co-partnership in 1878 and began the publication of the Columbia Chronicle. Mr. Gale was editor and Mr. May business manager.
It was the first and only republican paper published in Dayton. As business manager he employed R.E. Peabody the present owner and publisher as printer.
Mr. May has always been successful in business and financially is well off. Politically he is a staunch republican and always has been, casting his first vote for Abraham Lincoln and for every republican president since that date. He never scratched a ticket, always taking it straight.
