Roy (Red) Harold FREEMAN

Family records also have his name as Harold Roy. He was born four months after his father died.
In 1888 the Freeman family was associated with the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS) old Brick Church and the new Stone Church in Independence, Missouri according to the church centennial publication in 1988.
In 1901 (some record it as 1903) his mother, step-father (George E. Hartwell), brothers, and with his mother pregnant with his step-sister Audrey they moved to Dazey, Barnes County, North Dakota. While at Dazey, Roy worked as a farmer, in a store, a mailman, and a railroad telegrapher on the Sioux Line.
The 1910 Census has him living in Dazey with his wife and one child, renting a house next door to his wife's grandfather and employed as a carpenter. On Page 66 of the Dazey Centennial Book it indicates he was an early US Postal Service carrier.
In 1912 they moved to Valley City, Barnes County where he managed the grocery department of a general store. While in Valley City he was baptized into the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints by J.E. Wildermuth.
While living in Fargo, Cass County he registered for the World War I draft. The record indicates he was blind in the right eye and had four children under 12 years of age. There is no record of him ever being drafted.
The 1920 Census has him living in vicinity of 2nd Ave and 8th Street South in Fargo. While in Fargo he had various jobs, i.e. railroad detective and railroad freight manager on the Milwaukee railroad, veternarian, and school janitor.
The 1930 Census has him living in Fargo (1117 7th Avenue North) as a laborer in a park.
In 1945 as a custodian of Lincoln Public School he fell while painting and broke several ribs. Shortly after, he caught pneumonia which eventually took his life.
The following obituary is taken from the Fargo Forum:
"R. H. FREEMAN OF FARGO DIES. Roy H. Freeman, 57, of 914 First Ave S, died Friday morning in a Fargo hospital. He had been ailing for some time but had been seriously ill only a week.
Born in Independence, Mo., March 8, 1888, he moved with his parents to a farm near Ames, Iowa, as an infant and as a young man to Dazey, N. D., where he was employed for several years as rural mail carrier and later in a store. He married Elora Stevens at Dazey Jan. 4, 1909. They moved in 1912 to Valley City, where Mr. Freeman managed the grocery department of a general store, and in 1914 to Fargo.
Mr. Freeman has been employed in various capacities here and for the past three years was custodian of Lincoln public school. He was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Fargo.
He leaves Mrs. Freeman; two sons, Cpl. Harold B., and Cpl. Willis, both in Germany; two daughters, Mrs. Arlie Peterson, 1420 Third Av S, and Lorene, at home; a brother, Carl, in Iowa; a half brother, Leo Applegarth of Dazey; a half sister, Audrey, in Missouri, and six grandchildren.
Funeral services will be in O. J. Hanson chapel at a time to be set. Elder C. R. Rotzien will officiate. Burial will be in Springvale Cemetery."
