On 19 March 1910 he was baptized into the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Lamoni, Decatur County, Iowa. He was confirmed 24 November 1912 near Culbertson, Dawson County, Montana. He was ordained an Elder on 26 July 1914 in Andes, Richland County, Montana.
On 12 September 1918 while living in Andes as a farmer he registered for the World War I draft.
In the 1920 Census he and Emma and family are living in Andes.
In the 1930 Census he is living in Misakawa, Indiana, dwelling #12, family #13. The household includes his wife Vivia; children Lillian, Emma and Carol; mother Abbie Hartwell; half-sister Audrey Hartwell; and Vivia's mother Barbara Davis.
In the 1940 Census, Carl, Emma, and Carol are living in Hamilton, Decatur County, Iowa.
After the 1940 Census, the family was living in Ava, Missouri [In a December 1955 letter, William Nelson McGoon indicated Carl and family were there] where Carl's mother died in 1943, and then later to the Independence, Jackson County, Missouri area.
