Peder Jons. Stageberg

(1 May 1848 - 24 Jul 1926)

Peder went by the name John Aavik or John Ovick in America. He was J.P. Janssen Aavig when he filed his Declaration of Intent in 1885 and appeared in District Court for Naturalization in 1897. His death certificate gives his name as John Aavik as does his obituary published in the Kanabeck County Times. On his wife Karen's death certificate he is John Ovik. Within the Staberg family it seems he was called Peter as noted in the notice of his death in the Hudson Star-Observer [HSO], 5 Aug 1926. Peder emigrated in April 1878.

Andrew Staberg of this city and Mr. and Mrs. John Staberg of Lakeland attended the funeral of their brother, Peter, who was buried at Grasston, Minn. on Tuesday of last week.

Aged Man dies at Home of Sister in Comfort
John Aavik died July 24 at the age of 78 years, at the home of his sister, in Comfort township.
He was born in Norway in 1848, and upon coming to this country located in Polk county, where he remained for 47 years. After the death of his wife he came to this county and made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Peter Ovick in Comfort township.
Services were held Tuesday afternoon in the Grasston Lutheran Church, Rev. N. Wm. Anderson officiating. Interment was in Grasston Cemetery.
