Joen Pedersen Stageberg

(3 May 1810 - 1899)

According to the Stjørdal parish registers, 1797-1815, Joen, the son of Peder Olsen Brattås and wife Beret Joensdatter, was born 3 May 1810 and baptized in Hegra church on 18 June of the same year. Nedre Stjørdal parish records list Joen Pedersen Sonbjorg, aged 35 and the girl Bereth Andersdatter, age 24, being married in Værnes church on 18 Jul 1845. The record says both were born in Stjørdal, however, in the 1865 census her birthplace is given as Selbu. According to the Selbu bygdebok (Selbu I Fortid of Nätid by Kjell Haarstaad and Per O. Rød, Bind IV), Berit, the daughter of Anders Jonsen and Kari Olsdatter Kolsetplassen was born in 1821 and left for Stordalen in 1842.

Stjørdal or Stordalen-what’s the difference?
Stjørdal (o with slash) is the town by Trondheim Airport, and consists of the areas Stjørdal, Skatval, Hegra and Lånke. The name has always been written with an 'ø' or 'oe'. Stordalen is a small side valley of Meraker and is never written with an 'ø' or 'oe'. Meraker belonged earlier to the area which was called "Upper Stjørdal" together with Hegra and of course Stordalen in Meraker. In the U.S., people who said they came from Stordalen, in most cases came from Stjørdal, but they changed the Norwegian ø with an o because that letter, the ø, isn’t used here.
Beret and Joen had eight children, five of whom are known to have immigrated to America. Two are believed to have died at a young age in Norway, and the oldest, a daughter, Berith, remained in Norway where she married Ole Olsen Østkil in 1871. According to the Stjørdalsboka for Hegra, Ole purchased Stågåberget in 1871. Berith sold Stågåberget in 1904.

First to leave their home in Øvre Størdalen was their son Peder who left in late winter or early spring 1879 with a destination of Red Wing, Minnesota. In America Peder became known John Peter. Aavig which became Peter Ovik.
Their son John left in the spring of 1880, the year after Peder. Digitalarkivet emigrant records list his destination as Zumbrota, Minnesota. His ticket was paid for in America.
The following year, in the fall of 1881, daughter Ingeborg, husband Peter Aavig and three children left for Zumbrota. John and Berit’s youngest son, Ole, accompanied them. Their tickets were paid for in America.
Joen and Berit were the last of the family to leave Stjørdal parish, leaving in the Spring of 1884 with their son, Andrew, and Andrew’s family. The families traveled by a feeder ship, the Hero, to Hull, England, overland to Liverpool, and from Liverpool to New York aborad the Germanic, arriving on 2 September 1884. On the manifest John P. Stagsbourg is listed as age 65, a laborer, with a destination of U.S.A. Their tickets were paid for in America.

Not much is known about Joen and Beret after their arrival in America. It’s likely they settled in Goodhue county near their children. It’s believed that Beret died about 1893 and Joen about 1899 but death and burial records have been located at this time.
With the exception of Peder, who took the name of Peter Ovik, all the sons of Joen and Beret assumed the Staberg surname in America.

For many years the Stabergs stayed in contact and held reunions. A large one, the first in a number of years, was held in August 1962 at the Cedar Lake school in Polk county. Subsequent reunions were held at Hudson in 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1968 and a last one at Jays Park, North St. Paul, in August 1969.

Hudson Star-Observer, Hudson, Wis., 1 Oct 1964
The inclement weather on Sunday, Sept. 20 put no damper on the gala family reunion for the Staberg clan. Relatives from St. Paul, Minneapolis, No. St. Paul, Lakeland, Stillwater, Star Prairie, Woodville, and even Milaca, Minn. met with the Hudson contingent for a supper-picnic at Prospect Park.
The committee hung big awnings over the north windows of the park pavilion and built a roaring fire in the huge fireplace to keep everyone comfortable, cheerful and good humored.
Stabergs, Stagebergs and Staybergs all report a happy day.
