Leonard J. Casanova, 78, of 1126 Sixth st., a long-time Hudson businessman, died Friday morning, Oct. 26, at Hudson Memorial Hospital, where he had been a patient for six weeks, after undergoing hip surgery.
He was born Dec. 27, 1905, in Hudson, the son of Joseph and Catherine (Karras) Casanova. He attended St. Patrick's elementary school and was graduated from Hudson High school in 1923.
On Oct. 21, 1936, in St. Paul he was married to Agnes McClurg, then a Hudson grade school teacher.
He was a co-owner and operator with his brother Raymond of Casanova Beverage company until his retirement in 1972. The family business was founded by his father, Joseph, and an uncle, Chris, in 1896 in Hudson.
In his younger years he was frequently sought after as a vocal soloist and on several occasions in the 1920's he appeared on programs on Twin City radio stations, in an era when radio technology was in its infancy.
During his lifelong residency in Hudson he was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Knights of Wisconsin, Hudson Lodge of Elks No. 640, the former Hudson Commercial club and the Hudson Booster club.
Surviving are his wife, Agnes; two brothers, Raymond Casanova of Hudson and Dr. John R. Casanova of Watertown; and a sister, Katherine Baumgartner of Rosemount, Minn.
Mass of Christian burial was Monday, Oct. 29, at St. Patrick's Catholic church. Interment was in the family lot in St. Patrick's cemetery. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Agnes Ryan and Christine Demonico.
