NORMAN BERNARD SANGSLAND
Norman Bernard Sangsland, born (second son) July 26, 1903, died July 26, 1942 at the age of 39 years.
He was born in Hudson, Wisconsin and came with his parents from Wisconsin when they homesteaded at Black Butte, near Regent, North Dakota, in 1908. In the fall he moved with his parents to Hettinger, North Dakota. He attended grade and high schoo. He was confirmed at the Lutheran Church.
He joined the Marines at the age of 18 and received many medals of honor. Most of his service in the Marines was in the Hawaiian Islands. Because of his good figure he was chosen to march for special occasions all through the service. He remained a bachelor.
He had a military funeral in Auburn, California, at the age of 39 years, with all the military services represented. He is buried at the military plot there. His sister Estelle never miises decorating his grave for decoration day, noting all the flags on all the graves.

SANGSLAND RITES HELD
Pneumonia claimed the life of Norman Bernard Sangsland at Riverside hospital, Susanville, Calif., July 26, his 39th birthday. Norman suffered a severe attack of pneumonia in March and had never completely recovered.
Mr. Sanglsand had served in the U. S. Marine Corps, enlisting at Ft. Snelling. He spent one year in service at Ft. Snelling, two years at San Diego, Calif., as a first class private, two and a half years at Pearl Habor as corporal, and one and a half years at Shanghia, China, as corporal.
Interment was made at Anaheim, Calif., in a beautiful place for service men. Rev. Roe of the Lutheran church in Sacremento, Calif. was in charge of the services, conducted from the Hislop Chapel. Norman was given a military service with servicemen as pall bearers and his casket was draped with the United States flag.
He was born at Hudson, Wis., and came with his parents to Hettinger 32 years ago. Survivors are his mother, Mrs. Sangsland, Susanville, Calif.; four sisters, Mrs. Edwin Skogen, Hettinger; Mrs. Norval Lemm, Susanville, Calif., Mrs. Rex Cartwright, Auburn, Calif., Mrs. Elmer Olson, Sacremento, Calif.; three brothers, Carl, Susanville; Eddie in the army in Newfoundland, and Elmer, of Hettinger.
