Joseph Christian Larsen, 87, of Hudson, died Thursday, May 6, at the Christian Community Home in Hudson, where he had been a resident since November 2002.
He was born September 13, 1916, at the family farm hone outside Hudson, the son of Louis C. and Mary Karras Larsen. He was the youngest of nine children, and the last surviving family member.
For 23 years he lived and worked on the family farm; was employed by Casanova Beverage Company, Hudson, from 1939 to 1963; owned and operated a tavern in Spring Valley from 1963 until 1973; and was employed by the Hudson School District until his retirement in 1979.
On June 10, 1944, he married Kathleen Ryan at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hudson.
They continued to live in the Hudson area and had give children: Michael (Linda) Larsen of St. Paul, Lawrence (Jean) Larsen of North Hudson, Joleen Stadsklev of Minnetonka, Minnesota, Monica (Ron) Olson of La Crosse, and James (Pat) Larsen of River Falls. His wife, Kathleen, died October 2, 1959.
He married Betty (Helpap) Doonan, January 7, 1963 and had two stepchildren from this marriage, Dennis Doonan of Stillwater and Doreen (Doonan) Deal of Hudson. Immediately following their marriage, the family moved to Spring Valley, where they owned and operated Betty & Joe's Bar for 10 years.
Throughout his life he enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, gardening and volunteer work. He was an outgoing, optimistic, fun loving, generous person who made friens easily. He was a highly respected and involved member of the community. He served as an elected member of the Village of North Hudson board of trustees in the 1950s, the Pepper Festival Committee and was a long time member of the Lion's and Elk's Clubs. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus where he served as treasurer for many years.
During his years in Spring Valley, he was a member of the Businessmen's Association, again served as an elected village trustee, and was president of the Pierce County Tavern League. He was a long time member of St. Parick's parish in Hudson.
He is survived by his spouse, Betty, his children and stepchildren, 19 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was from St. Patrick's Church, Monday, May 10, followed by burial at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery.
