Laura J. Kinney, 79, of River Falls died Friday, Jan. 9, of ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) at Hudson Medical Center.
She was born east of Hudson on Feb. 24, 1918, the daughter of Nels and Gurina (Hallanger) Jenson, and attended Hudson schools, graduating from Hudson High School in 1936. She earned a teaching degree in 1940 from River Falls Teachers College, now UW-River Falls, and taught for four years, a year each in Maiden Rock, Ellsworth, the state of Oregon and Montrose, Minn.
In 1948 she earned a nursing degree from the University of Minnesota and served in the Cadet Nursing Corps in World War II. She worked in public health nursing for a year in St. Paul, worked two years as a nurse at the River Falls hospital and, in 1950, began an 18-year career at the Hudson Hospital.
In 1968 she took a job for two years at the River Falls hospital and then worked for 10 years at the county hospital in New Richmond, retiring in 1980. Shortly before retirement, she began volunteering at Westside Elementary School in River Falls and volunteered there for 18 years, quiting only when she became ill four months before her death.
On Oct. 5, 1950, at St. Patrick's Church in Hudson, she was married to George Emmett Kinney. They lived in Hudson and raised their family in the Northline Schoolhouse on County A. He died June 27, 1977, and in 1978, she moved to River Falls, where she remained for 20 years. Last October, she moved to Friendship Manor in Hudson and lived there until she was admitted to the swing bed unit at Hudson Medical Center, where she died.
Her hobbies included quilting, reading, painting, traveling, arts and crafts and gathering family history. She also volunteered for other groups, including Girl Scouts.
Surviving are three sons, Tim of Minnneapolis, Tom of Hammond and Terry of New Richmond; two daughters, Sheila (Joe) Ambrose of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., and Kathleen (Tim) Smith of Fairbanks, Alaska; two grandchildren, Anna and Emmett Smith of Fairbanks; a former daughter-in-law, Lana Tiche of Boyers, Penn.; and three sisters, Leila Christenson of Wessington Springs, S.D., Jane Rasmussen of New Richmond, and Marge Jenson [sister-in-law] of River Falls. She is also survived by niece Jane (Alfredo) Vega of Hudson [and Joey (Bob) Johnson of Marshfield] and Kinney relatives all over the Hudson area.
A memorial Mass was Monday, Jan. 12, at 1 p.m., at St. Patrick's Church.
