His daughter, Augusta, wrote of her father; "Father left his native Sweden, Smaland, at the age of 50 with his wife and three children. Near the end of their ocean voyage death claimed his wife and two of the children, a boy and a girl, from a contagious disease. They were buried near the shore of New York.
There, with his youngest girl, nine years old, he worked for a farmer about a year-- where they suffered many hardships. Soon he left for Minnesota where some friends had started a home near Goose Lake. About a mile away he built a one room house. Finding it too difficult to live alone in this way he was introduced to a young woman of about 30 who had recently arrived from Sweden and was working for a General Pratt of the Civil War during housework. This
was in Rush City, Minnesota. They were married December 6, 1872."
