Note1882In spite of his father being a policeman, Richard was made a ward of the state on 9 Jun 1882 for "uncontrollable" behaviour, sentenced to 1 year. He was sent to a boys home in Sandhurst (Bendigo) from which he absconded & was sent back. At the completion of his initial sentence he was recommitted for another 5 years & 8 months, finally being released 25 Feb 1891 when he turned 18
