Military18 Mar 1916enlisting in the AIF 18 Mar 1916 giving his occupation as “driver”. He was shipped off to France & didn’t appear to be a very reliable soldier, amassing a long list of trangressions, primarily for being AWOL. He was court martialled for desertion at Ypres when he went missing for 10 days just when the battalion was about to move to the front but he got off & was instead found guilty of being AWOL & sentenced to 2 years hard labour (suspended until the war ended apparently). He returned to Australia with Violet on the “Osterley” in early 1920 & he was discharged on 28 Apr 1920
