Their admission records note that their mother was dead & father Simon was in Melbourne Hospital. He was initially fostered out to a Mary James in Castlemaine & subsequently to a Mrs Miller in the same town. On 9 May 1896 he began to be “licensed” (bonded labour) to various employers
