Chet Peters Book: William was the athletic type, excelling in wrestling, running, etc. When only 21 years old in 1849 he crossed the plains to Ca., staying about 2 years, then went on to Oregon and stayed a short time with an older brother at Portland. He then returned to Iowa in the fall of 1852, married and then organized a wagon train of about 100 persons to go west. They arrived in southern Oregon in the spring of 1854, settling in Douglas Co. He applied for Donation Lands (#1714) in Douglas CO, where he ranched, raised cattle and trained race horses. He was fond of music, a good violinist, jovial and a gifted conversationalist.
