Due to the discovery of gold in CA., there was a large migration to the Pacific coast. Catherine's oldest son first settled there and was soon followed by six of the younger children and their families, 30th March 1853., Catherine stayed behind. They left the banks of the Mississippi and in wagons drawn by oxen they slowly made their way across the plains and rugged mountains. After 5 months of travel, they landed near Portland, Oregon. From here these families scatter up and down the coast.
