Jesse Jackson Kirkpatrick

Jesse was born 1 September 1804 in Madison County, Illinois. He was married first, ca. 1833, but his first wife's name is unknown. He married second on 16 Jun 1842 in Adams County, Illinois, to Phoebe Elvira (Alvira) Thayer, daughter of Perez and Hannah (Haskins) Thayer, who was born 12 April 1815 in Massachusetts. Jesse died 11 Feb 1869 and is buried at Evergreen Cemetery, Camp Point, Adams County, Illinois. Following Jesse's death, Phoebe moved to Kahoka, Clark County, Missouri, to live with her daughter Eliza Kirkpatrick Kenney. She continued to live there until her death. Phoebe died 17 November 1882 in Kahoka, and is buried there in the Kahoka Cemetery.

Jesse was a veteran of the Black Hawk War of 1832. He served as a private/bugler in Captain Enoch Duncan's Company (Previously Captain James Stephenson's company), of the Illinois Mounted Riflemen, under the general command of Colonel Henry Dodge, from May until September 1832. He was awarded two different bounty land warrants for this service and the related papers are on file with the National Archives in Washington.

In 1840 he was residing in Quincy, Illinois. In the 1850 census, Jesse J. Kirkpatrick and family are found living in Ursa Township, Adams County, Illinois and his profession is listed as that of farmer. In the 1860 census he is found at Camp Point, Adams County, Illinois, but his profession is that of druggist. A descendant has scrawled on a family record that Jesse J. was the first druggist in Keokuk, Iowa. He was also a lay preacher in the Methodist Church.

Provided by Roger Petersen, West Des Moines, IA on May 27, 2015: Death notice from the Decatur Republican, [Decatur, Illinois], February 18, 1869: "The oldest native born citizen of Illinois--Mr. Jesse J. Kirkpatrick, of Camp Point, Adams county--died last week. He was born in Bond county in 1804, being 64 years of age."

The Quincy Whig, Quincy, Illinois, Thursday, June 18, 1885, Page 5: Jesse M. Kirkpatrick, an old and respected citizen of Lima, Adams county, Ill, died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. America Tibbits, in.Lima, May 22, 1885. Mr. Kirkpatrick was born; in Tennessee, May 26, 1812. Removed to Alabama, thence to Kentucky, from which place he emigrated to Adams county, Ill. in 1828, where he resided till the time of his death. He was a consistent member of the M. E. church for many years, and in politics he was an inflexible republican. Since 1855 he had also belonged to the Masonic fraternity being first a member of Marcelline lodge, and afterwards of Lima lodge, by which organization he was buried with the ceremonies of the order.
