Edward John Michaels

From the Oelwein Daily Register, 7 December 1945: Edward J. Michaels has resumed his duties at the Wilson Co. today after spending the past 22 months in the E. T. O. [European Theatre of Operations]. He also served for 11 months in the States. He received a discharge at Camp Grant, Ill., November 15th. The veteran has the Presidential Citation, French Decoration, E. T. O. ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Victory ribbon with three battle stars and arrowhead for the Normandy Invasion. He served with the first Army.

Obituary provided by Oelwein Area Genealogical Society: Edward John Michaels of 116 3rd Avenue SE, Oelwein died at Mercy Hospital at noon on Wednesday, 17 January 1962, age 52. He was a lifelong resident of Oelwein and was survived by his wife, Evelyn Frazer Michaels, and one son, John. His 2 brothers are George of Oelwein and William of Albert Lea, Minnesota, and 2 sisters, Mrs. Robert (Elsie) Medaus and Mrs. Albert (Eva) Neuman, both of Oelwein. Burial was held at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens Cemetery near Oelwein. Funeral services were held at Brant Funeral Home on Saturday, 20 January 1962 with Rev. P. C. Lutz officiating.

Oelwein Daily Register, Oelwein, Iowa, Thursday, February 1, 1962, Page 4, Col. 3: Edward John Michaels was born in Oelwein, August 17, 1909. His parents were John and Martha Michaels. Together with two brothers and a sister, Edward was baptized in the parental home on March 21, 1918 by the Rev. E. J. Braulick. He received his education in the public schools of Oelwein.

From 1943 to 1945 he served with the armed forces in World War II.

On Feb. 8, 1943, he married Evelyn Frazer. They had one son, John Edward. Before his late illness, Mr. Michaels was employed at Oelwein creamery.

On Aug. 29, 1961, Mr. Michaels was stricken with a respiratory ailment and entered Veteran's Hospital in Iowa City on Aug. 39, where he later underwent surgery. He was able to be home from time to time but returned to the hospital frequently for check-ups. On Jan. 15 he was admitted to Mercy hospital, Oelwein and died at approximately 11:15 a.m. Jan. 17, 1962. He was 52. His parents, two sisters and one brother preceded him in death.

Surviving are his widow and his son, John Edwards; two brothers, William Michaels, Albert Lea, Minn., and George Michaels of Oelwein; two sisters, Mrs. Robert Medaus and Mrs. Albert Neumann, both of Oelwein; also Mr. and Mrs.Stan Zolczynski of Oelwein; Floyd Shepherd, Munich, Germany; John Shepherd, Antioch, Calif., and Richard Shepherd of Oceanside, Calif., nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held from the Brant Funeral Home Saturday afternoon, Jan. 20, 1962 with pastor Paul C. Lutz officiating. Mrs. E. F. Schuchmann presided at the organ and accompanied Mrs. Al Knief and Mrs. Paul Lutz who sang, "Beyond the Sunset" and Rock of Ages." Burial was made at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

Woodlawn Cemetery records show Edward John Michaels is buried there, not Floral Hills.
