David John Galloway
( - )
David Galloway 20 years of age and Jane Galloway 24 years of age, both of Cavan Twp., Durham Co., Ont., Can. were married Feb. 7, 1843 by Licence, by the Rev. James Douglas, Presbyterian Minister, of Cavan & Monaghan. Witnesses were William Galloway and James Boyd.
From the Lindsay Post dated Sept. 10, 1909 the following:
Obituary, David Galloway.
After a brief illness of cancer poisoning the death of Mr. David Galloway took place, at his residence, at the Miner's Bay, on Wednesday, at the advanced age of 86 years. He was reeve during 1884 and 1885. He took great interest in agriculture, and was quite successful at the fall fairs for many miles around. In his garden may be seen a very prolific grape, which he propagated the fruit of which has attracted attention wherever shown.
He was postmaster at Miner's Bay since the opening of a post office at that point; and held the appointment as lockmaster, or caretaker of the Government Dams at Elliott's Falls.
He was predeceased by his wife a few years ago, but afterwards married a daughter of Mr. Wm. Williams, who survives him. Mr. John Galloway, of Miner's Bay, and Mrs. Stephen Otto are a son and daughter.
The funeral took place to the Kinmount Cemetery Thursday and was very largely attended.
David Galloway was Baptized, August 24, 1823 by the John Thompson.
Nat. Archives Of Canada Show that he was Postmaster of the Miners Bay, Victoria Co, Ont Can. appointed 8/1/1908 until his death in 1909. Also these records indicate a Mrs. Rose Galloway was then appointed 9/15/ 1909, she resigned 9/30/1910. She may have been David & Janes youngest son John Galloway's wife, although I have no other proof, just pure speculation.
Kinmount Cemetery is Located Lot 1 Con 13, Somerville Twp. Victoria Co. Ont. Can. Land records show that David Owned 3 parcels of land in 1875 in Lutterworth,Twp. Lutterworth has made very strong progress. In 1874, it had seventy-nine rate payers, and in 1883 that number had increased to one hundred and thirty-eight. It is now represented by Mr. D. Galloway, one of the settlers on the lake shore, who has a fine location and some excellent land, celebrated for the production of vegetables and fruit at an early period in each season.
From, "In Quest of Yesterday" it mentioned that Lutterworth was settled long before the Bobcaygeon road was built as it was accessible via the Gull River by canoe and small boats. Early Settlers (among others) were Mr. and Mrs. David Galloway (in 1897 he was president of the Minden Fair) moved there from Millbrook with their daughter Mary Jane. She became the bride of Steven Otto, a successful trapper. There is a comment that the Minden Echo of 1884 reported information on the township and it's ability to build schools and pay it debenture debt for the railway. (IB&O) It indicates that the reeve was David Galloway who was doing a marvellous job and that the municipality should have such a trustworthy council.
On my map of Lutterworth Township, it shows David Galloway in what appears to be the 4th Concession on lot 18. The North East part of the land is on the shores of Miners Bay which forms part of Gull Lake.
The above 3 paragraphs came from David Kemlo of The Greater Harvey Historical Society (Covering the Galway, Cavendish & Harvey Townships) (just south of Kinmount and Haliburton)
1861 census shows David 45 was living with his mother & her second husband William Hall in CavanTwp., his wife Jane 42 his daughter Mary Jane 11, William James Galloway 14.

"For years there was a log store on Lot 46 [Norland], the site of the home of the former James A. LeCraw. In 1868 - 69, the merchant in this building was Mr. Thomas I. Halliday, very likely the same man who had been a merchant in Coboconk in 1867. His place was taken by David Galloway who, together with his wife Jane, lived on Lot 19 while they ran the store. The Galloways had both properties seized and sold for taxes in 1874 but managed to recover the home lot while the store was purchased by Mr. George Rumney. David Galloway moved north to Miners Bay where he built a store on the site of
present day Miners Bay Lodge and where he also became the Bay's first postmaster in 1908.

"David Galloway moved to Miners Bay from Norland in 1879. He had a store where Miners Bay Lodge now stands and became the first Miners Bay postmaster in August 1908. When his first wife died, he married Rose Williams, daughter of a local carpenter, William Williams.
Galloway's property was purchased by a man named Tracy who built the first tourist lodge there. In the early 1930's, the property was purchased by the Wunker family who have developed Miners Bay Lodge to its present high status.
Miners Bay postmasters have been
