Following is the Obituary of John Galloway from the Lindsay Post, dated Feb. 24, 1888: It is our sad duty to record the death on the 11th of Feb., Mr. John Galloway, one of the early pioneer settlers of this township, in his 74th year. The deceased had been an active and hale old man up to within a month of his death, when he caught a severe cold from which he never recovered. He was one of the first twelve settlers of Manvers. He came with his father and mother from Edinburgh, Scotland and settled on land that now forms part of Millbrook. John and some of his brothers took up land in Manvers in 1832. He was an active member of the Methodist church, and industrious and public spirited citizen, and a good man whose life and example were worthy of commendation. Rev. Mr. Courtice, who preached the funeral sermon, spoke in the highest terms of the departed brother. The Funeral was one of the largest ever seen in the township, the deceased being held universally in the highest respect and esteem. He leaves a widow and six sons and three daughters all grown up. One son, John is a prosperous broker in Jamestown, Pa., two more are in Dakota, and two more at home; one daughter is married to Mr. Robert Thorndike of Manvers; another to Mr. David Galloway of North Monaghan, and one is at home. He donated land part of Lot 15-Con. 7 Manvers Twp .) for the Galloway School on 18 March 1879. John Purchased this property on Jan 30 1856. The first property he bought was lot # 12--Con.# 7 Manvers Twp. Durham Co. on 13 March 1844. GALLOWAY JOHN .... MANVERS TOWNSHIP .... 7 15 ... 1836
