Abigail Sherwood

(17 Feb 1777 - 15 Jan 1862)

Who are Abigail's parents:
Abigail's parents are in question based on LDS film 599306 page 851 which does not shown her as a child of Jehiel Sherwood and Sarah Squire. Her parents may be Jehiel Sherwood and Sarah Squire based on info from Ancestry.com and DAR records. The NEH&G Register for 1915 Vol 69 page 366 for the Greenfield Hill Ch Records list the children of Jehiel Sherwood and wife Sarah which does not include an Abigail. The LDS film 599306 page 851 "History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield", Vol II by Donald Jacobus dated 1932 (my e-books) at the FHC (see file: Osborn.16 image 14 and Sherwood.26) does not show her as a daughter of Jehiel Sherwood and Sarah Squire but shows the same family as the NEH&G Register. I believe this is based on "Greenfield Hill Church Records, Fairfield, CT" in LDS FHC film 4199 page 100 which does not include four children: Lyman born 27 Sept 1770, Abigail born 17 Feb 1777, Mabel born 20 Aug 1779 and William born 17 Feb 1786. This film may include incorrectly a son called Hezekiah born 6 July 1777. This film is not the original records of the church but is a transcript which may be in error. The DAR record shown below supports Abigail as the daughter of Jehiel and Sarah Sherwood. The 1800 census (just after their marriage) shows her father Jehiel Sherwood and Nathaniel Hibbard's father living close together in Dutchess County, New York.

See "Genealogy of the Hibbard Family Who are Descendants of Robert Hibbard of Salem, MA" by Augustine George Hibbard dated 1901 page 121 (from LDS on-line) showing Nathaniel Hibbard married Abigail Sherwood 11 Aug 1799 and their children.

DAR recorded and accepted an application dated 2 Aug 1909 by Mrs. Ida L. Hollingworth Fitchard, member #74380, which shows the children of Jehiel Sherwood and Sarah Squire and includes Abigail Sherwood born 17 Feb 1777, died 1860, who married Nathaniel Hebbard (see file: DAR47380.jpg) and does not include a son Hezekiah.

(V) Jehiel, son of Joseph and Sarah (Osborn) Sherwood, was born March 1, 1739. He built, in 1765, on Greenfield Hill, his comfortable house, where with his wife (a very superior woman) he reared his ten children. He served during the revolution, enlisting in Colonel Beebe's regiment; sergeant in 1775, at Fishkill; with Colonel Whiting in 1777, and ensign of Fourth Company, Fourth Regiment, January, 1780. His house was used as a hospital for the wounded after Tryon's raid. He married, October 5, 1763, Sarah Squire. of Greenfield Hill, Connecticut. Children: Squire, Jehiel, Sarah, Lyman, Charity, Stephen, Abigail, Mabel, Lyman, William. After the death of his wife, about 1796, he disposed of the home farm to his son Stephen, and with his two youngest children settled on the Oblong, now South East, Putnam county, New York, paying for the farm when the line was finally established. At his death it became the property of his son Lyman and it has been in the possession of his family to the present time. The family burial plot is on this farm where the families of Jehiel and Lyman are all interred. Source: Cutter, William Richard. Ancestry.com for Horace Hibbard, born 1806, shows his mother as Abigail Sherwood and her parents as Jehiel Sherwood and Sarah Squire. This needs confirmation.

1880 census for son, Nathaniel Hubbard and wife Sarah J. shows his mother was born in New York and not CT(?). Do I have an error on Abigail Sherwood? Abigail's death record in 1862 shows she was born in CT.

1862 death date from Ancestry.com Barber Collection for New York City Newspaper Death Extracts 1801-1890. She was age 85, therefore born in 1777. LDS film 447565 "Manhattan Death Register 1795-1865" shows death date as 15 Jan. 1862, age 84 (born 1778), born in CT, buried in Putnam Co., NY, file #131.

1860 death year per DAR member application for Mrs. Ida L. Hollingworth Fitchard member #74380 (see above).

1850 census check

1840 census for NY City Ward 8 shows an Abigail Hibbard age 60-70 living with 2 males and 2 females all ages 20-30 and one male age 5-10.

1830 census for NY City Ward 11 shows a Mrs. Hibbert age 50-60 living with 2 girls ages 5-10.

1825 at the time of death of her husband, Nathaniel Hibbard, she was of the town of Carmel, Putnam Co., NY per NY, Putnam Co. Probate Records 1812-1868 in FHC film 838102 page 499-500. This also shows he died intestate with his widow, Abigail, plus Elisha and Hiram Hibbard, his children, who are of age and living in New York City. All other children are underage.

1820 census for Carmel, Putnam Co., NY shows a Nathaniel Hebbert age 26-44 (he is 42). There is one extra male child age 0-10 and missing are Jane Ann age 9 and Harriet age 11. His wife Abigail is age 26-44 (she is 43).

1812 - Southeast Township in Dutchess Co., NY was split off and made part of Putnam Co., NY.

1810 census for Southeast Township, Dutchess Co., NY shows her age 26-45 (she is 33) with her husband and family.

1805 Jehiel Sherwood, her father (?), was in Southeast, Dutchess Co., NY per LDS film 599306 page 851 shown above. 1800 census shown below confirms Jehiel Sherwood was living near Nathaniel and Abigail Hibbard.

1800 census for Southeast Township, Dutchess Co., NY shows her age 16-25 (she is 23) with her husband, Horace Hibbard, and one child. Her 2nd child was born in 1802. 1800 census for Southeast, Dutchess Co., NY also shows Jehiel Sherwood age 45+ (he is 62) living near Nathaniel Hibbard. Nathaniel had married one year earlier Abigail Sherwood, Jehiel's possible daughter.

1799 marriage date from "Genealogy of the Hibbard Family Who are Descendants of Robert Hibbard of Salem, MA" shown above. Location is from the IGI.

1797 June 2nd, Jehiel Sherwood, possibly her father, purchased a farm from James Porter being one quarter mile south of the Sears burying ground at Doansburg, Dutchess Co., NY (now in Putnam Co which formed in 1812) containing 31 acres. The farm is on the north side of the line between Lot 8 and 9 of the Philipse Patent. The area is also known as Town Southeast. See "History of Putnam Co., NY" by William S. Pelletreau dated 1886 pages 442 and 452 at Heritage Quest Online.

1793 Jehiel Sherwood, her father, is still of Fairfield, CT per film 599306 page 851 "History and Genealogy of the Families of Old Fairfield", Vol II by Donald Jacobus.

1777 birth date and location is from Ancestry.com and IGI. Ancestral File at the FHC shows pedigree chart. DAR application for member #74380, shown above, confirms parents and birth date.
