(V) Jehiel, son of Joseph and Sarah (Osborn) Sherwood, was born March 1, 1739. He built, in 1765, on Greenfield Hill, his comfortable house, where with his wife (a very superior woman) he reared his ten children. He served during the revolution, enlisting in Colonel Beebe's regiment; sergeant in 1775, at Fishkill; with Colonel Whiting in 1777, and ensign of Fourth Company, Fourth Regiment, January, 1780. His house was used as a hospital for the wounded after Tryon's raid. He married, October 5, 1763, Sarah Squire. of Greenfield Hill, Connecticut. Children: Squire, Jehiel, Sarah, Lyman, Charity, Stephen, Abigail, Mabel, Lyman, William. After the death of his wife, about 1796, he disposed of the home farm to his son Stephen, and with his two youngest children settled on the Oblong, now South East, Putnam county, New York, paying for the farm when the line (Oblong) was finally established. At his death it became the property of his son Lyman and it has been in the possession of his family to the present time. The family burial plot is on this farm where the families of Jehiel and Lyman are all interred. Source: Cutter, William Richard. Probate
On 7 Oct 1807, his son, Lyman, was appointed as administrator (given Letters of Administration) of the estate for the intestate death of his father per FHC film 913806: NY Surrogate Court (Dutchess County) probate packet #480 (original records in the Dutchess County Courthouse, Poughkeepsie, New York). This estate should include the 31 acre farm that Jehiel Sherwood purchased on 2 June 1797 in Town Southeast, Dutchess Co. (now Putnam Co.) NY and which Lyman now owns. Need to review probate records as to who in the family got payments for their interest in this farm.
