Evelina Ann Maria Marshall

(25 Oct 1804 - 2 Dec 1883)

The story "Dorothea" written by Mrs. Marcus D. Johnson (aka Maria Marshall), was about her grandmother, Dorothia (Gamsby) Iemeson and published in the "Coos County Democrat", the editor of which was Charles D. Johnson, son of the author. This new paper was published weekly from 1859-1862 in North Stratford, NH.

1883 death date and location for Maria Marshall Johnson of 2 Dec. 1883 is per film #1001087 at FHC "Death Index for New Hampshire" which also shows her birth location. This shows her parents as Wm. Marshall born in Hamstead, Mass. and Margaret G. Jemison born Quebec. The 1883 death date is also based on a hand written chart belive to be done by Grace Brown Bresee. 1882 death date is per the "History of the town of Stratford New Hampshire 1773-1925" by Jeannette R. Thompson page 399

1880 census shows her as Maria M. Johnson age 74 (born 1806) living with her husband, Marcus D. Johnson, in Stratford, Coos Co., NH, keeping house and born in NH. Also in the home was her daughter, Margaret M. Johnson age 36. Her father was born in Mass. and her mother was born in Canada per this census.

1860 census shows her as Maria M. Johnson, age 56 (born 1804), living with Marcus D. Johnson age 54 in Stratford, Coos Co., NH. Also in the home were John J. age 26, Geo M. age 22, Guy W. age 20 and Margarett M. age 16. This shows she was born in NH. The 28 Oct. 1860 death date for her son, Charles De Forest Johnson is from film #1001087 @ FHC "Death Index for New Hampshire" which showed him as an attorney at law, born in Stratford and his father as Marcus D. Johnson and his mother as Margaret M. Johnson.

1850 census shows her as Maria Johnson age 45 (born 1805) living with Marcus D. Johnson age 44 and their children John J. age 16, Charles D. age 15, George M. age 12 and Guy W. age 10. This was in Stratford, Coos Co. NH. Also in the home was a boy not listed before by the name of Edwin P. Johnson age 13. This shows she was born in NH.

Johnson as age 30-40 living in Stratford, Coos Co., NH, with 3 male children age 5 and under, 1 male child age 5-10, 1 female age 10-15 and 1 female age 30-40 (this must be Evelina Ann Maria Marshall, his wife). Living next door was Elisha Johnson age 50-60 who was her husband's father and his family.

1832 marriage is per the "History of the town of Stratford New Hampshire 1773-1925" by Jeannette R. Thompson page 399: Evelina Ann Maria Marshall married by Rev. Edw. T. Manning to Marcus DeForest Johnson but no location was mentioned. A 1824 marriage date and location is from the IGI as Maria Marshall wed to Marcus D. Johnson in Brunswick twp, Vermont. Marriage location of Stratford, NH for Evelina Marshall and Marcus Johnson by Rev. Manning is based on a hand written chart belive to be done by Grace Brown Bresee. Marriage location needs to be confirmed.

1804 birth date and location is from the "History of the town of Stratford New Hampshire 1773-1925" by Jeannette R. Thompson page 399 as Evelina Ann Maria Marshall who was born in Northumberland, NH, on Oct. 25, 1804. The birth date is also from the IGI but incorrectly shows Maria Marshall as the daughter of Caleb Marshall and Margaret Iemeson born on Oct. 25, 1804 in Brunswick TWP., Essex Co., VT. This date is also on a hand written chart showing Evelina Marshall, belive to have been done by Grace Brown Bresee which does not show any place or parents. Her 1883 death data shown above also confirms her birth date and location as Northumberland, NH. The 1880, 1870, 1860 and 1850 census shows her born in NH and not Vermont. 1805-1806 the family must have moved from Northumberland, NH, birth place of Evelina, Brunswick, VT, where the remaining brothers and sisters were born while living on a farm now called the Flanders place in Vermont (see "History of the town of Strartford NH 1773-1925" show above).
